← Day 140

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work continues apart

Kevin is at the dock; Jenny is at the garden

The rain continues at a steady, rhythmic drumming against the corrugated roof of the shack. The water tank has finally filled to its 400-litre capacity, with water trickling over the overflow pipe. The island air is thick with humidity, smelling of salt and wet earth, while the dock remains slick and dark underfoot.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are at the dock, holding the corroded gudgeon bolts in your hand. The fibreglass mat sits dry beside you, waiting for more epoxy.

🔧 Kevin00:59

Kevin — walk to the cottage for the drill and spare stainless bolts, then return to dock to remove the corroded gudgeon bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
The bolts are shot — rusted through the threads. Need to drill them out and replace with stainless. Epoxy’s low, but I can stretch it with acetone and body heat if I have to. Gotta get this transom sound before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin01:02

Kevin — mix epoxy with acetone, warm tube against body, coat bolt threads and holes, install stainless gudgeon bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to spec. Then lay up fibreglass mat over scarf joint with remaining epoxy.

💭 peek at the thought
Drilled out the old bolts. Holes are clean. Stainless replacements are in hand. Now I need to mix the last of the epoxy — quarter tub left, thick as tar. Warm it in my armpit, cut it with a drop of acetone, brush it into the holes and on the new bolts. Set the gudgeons true. Then sister the scarf joint with what fibreglass I’ve got. Tide’s high, air’s damp. Gotta work fast before it skins over.

🔧 Kevin01:06

Kevin — secure the stainless gudgeon bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to 35Nm. Apply warmed epoxy to bolt threads and bolt holes.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy’s tacky, but the heat from my shirt is barely lifting the viscosity. I can’t afford to wait for a sun window; it's too moist now. The gudgeons sit tight, threads clean. The new bolts feel solid in the hand. I’ll bolt the transom to the hull, then run the epoxy over the scarf joint. If the tide comes, at least the hull will stay together.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You are in the garden, watching the heirloom tomato seeds dry on paper under the shade cloth. The soil in the raised beds feels cool and firm under your fingers.

🌿 Jenny01:00

Just wait. Just dry.

Kneel down and pat the surface of the soil to Ensure the weeds aren't choking the seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant them now, the salt will just rot them from the inside out. The island is too hungry today.

🌿 Jenny01:04

Not yet, Jenny.

Stand up, wipe the dirt from my knees, and walk toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting heavier, and my stomach is starting to growl. I should have eaten those limpets hours ago.

🌿 Jenny01:08

Kevin? You done?

Step inside the kitchen and close the door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is full, but I'm empty. I need to check the seed tin before the damp gets to them.
