Midday Heat

The two meet at the garden bench as the sun peaks.

Kevin and Jenny shared coffee in the cottage before splitting up to work on their separate tasks. Kevin went to the dock to inspect the dinghy transom and prepare epoxy for repair, while Jenny stayed in the garden to dry heirloom tomato seeds and check the water tank level.

🔧 Kevin00:52

Morning. Coffee's on if you want it.

walk over to the garden bench and sit down, stretching legs out, wincing slightly as right knee clicks

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful. Still favouring the ankle. Good light for once — should've done the shrine carvings proper yesterday but the epoxy had other ideas. Now the transom's waiting and the tide's pushing up.

🌿 Jenny00:53

I'll take a cup. The barometer is holding, at least.

Jenny wipes soil from her hands onto her jeans and walks toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks tired. I'm starving, and the weeds are already winning today.

🔧 Kevin00:54

Kevin — push up from the bench and follow her toward the cottage, grabbing the enamel mugs off the hook by the door, setting water to boil on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding. That's something. Means the epoxy might actually cure this time if I mix it right and the humidity stays down. She's moving slow but steady. Ankle's better than yesterday.

🌿 Jenny00:55

Don't use too much water, the seeds are still damp.

Jenny walks to the kitchen and pulls the heirloom seed tin from the shelf, checking the dryness of the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check the water tank before I forget. It's getting too low.

🔧 Kevin00:56

Won't. Just enough for two mugs.

measure water careful into the kettle, set it on the stove, glance at the seed tin on the shelf — paper edges curling, some packets still stuck together at the corners

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds damp. Tin's been breathing all night. She's right about the water — tank's fine but no sense wasting it on steam when the seeds need the air. Should check the transom epoxy before it skins over. Got maybe two hours of workable time if the barometer holds.

🌿 Jenny00:57

I need to separate the tomato seeds first. The wind is coming in.

Jenny opens the tin and carefully peels a clump of tomato seeds apart with her fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't dry these today, the humidity will rot the whole batch. Grandmother would hate it.
