The Storm Breaks

The wind picks up suddenly and rain begins to lash the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny huddle by the stove as the lantern flickers.

The air pressure continues to drop as the evening breeze picks up from the shore. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening securing the garden and preparing for a potential storm before the supply boat arrives near.

🌿 Jenny02:12

Check the seal on the kitchen window, Kevin. I'll cover the trays with canvas.

Jenny stands, pulls the heavy canvas over the seedling table, and moves the seed tin closer to the stove to keep it dry.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer dropped too fast; if the roof leaks, the seedlings are gone before they even hit the soil.

On it.

walk to kitchen window and press palm against the lower pane to feel for draft, then run fingers along the putty line checking for cracks

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest — that's the direction that drives water under the eaves. Window frame's been weeping since the last front. Need to check the putty before the glass rattles loose.

🌿 Jenny02:14

Use the self-amalgamating tape if you feel a draft.

Jenny grabs the roll of tape from the porch and waits for him to find the leak, her eyes fixed on the darkening window.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water gets through that frame, the humidity will rot the seeds in the tin.

🔧 Kevin02:14

Found it. Bottom rail, starboard side.

tear off a length of self-amalgamating tape with teeth, stretch it tight across the cracked putty line on the lower sash, and press it firm into the wood grain

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's a bandage, not a cure, but it'll hold the glass till morning. Putty's cracked along the bottom rail — salt and freeze-thaw did it.

🌿 Jenny02:16

Good. Make sure you overlap the edges.

Jenny lets out a small, relieved breath and begins to stir a pot of water on the stove for tea.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually paying attention. I hope the tape holds against the pressure.

🔧 Kevin02:16

Tarp's flapping. I'll weight it.

step onto the porch, grab two lengths of the new half-inch rope from the coil, and tie them diagonally over the tarp corners to the mooring cleats on the dock planking, pulling tight to stop the lift

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's sealing but the wind's lifting the porch tarp — generator's exposed. Need to weight it down before the rain shorts the magneto.

🌿 Jenny02:18

Be careful, the boards are slick already!

Jenny moves to the window, watching him through the glass as the rain starts to blur the world.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If that tarp rips, the seed tin will be soaked.

🔧 Kevin02:18

Three points. I've got it.

crouch low on the porch boards, brace one hand on the door frame, and with the other pull the rope taut over the tarp, securing it to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, then repeat on the opposite corner

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — dock planks are greasy with salt and rain. One slip and I'm in the drink with a cracked head. Move slow, keep three points.
