Evening meal

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the sun begins to dip. The smell of drying sea beet and coffee fills the room.

Kevin and Jenny stand by the old shrine as the tide recedes, exposing slick rocks and seaweed. The air is heavy with the 29°C heat of the wet season, and the falling barometer pressure at 1022 hPa suggests the coming storm is imminent.

Kettle on?

set the file down on the bench, wipe hands on a rag, walk to the cottage kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's back. The file's sharp now — sleeve's ready for the morning. Smell of sea beet means she's got the garden sorted too.

way. The seedlings are looking parched today.

Fill the kettle from the tap, place it on the stove, and check the soil in the tomato tray with a finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always asking for the kettle right when I start thinking about the water.

🔧 Kevin03:02

Tank's at three-eighty-eight. Plenty for a soak.

lean against the doorframe, watch her check the tray, reach for a mug from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Tap's still running. Tank's good. She's checking the tomatoes — smart, they'll fry in this heat under cloth if the soil goes dry.

🌿 Jenny03:03

It's enough until the boat comes, I.

way a small amount of water into the edge of the tray and look at the seed tin on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
Three-eighty-eight feels like nothing when the boat stays away.

🔧 Kevin03:04

Moldy packets are on the shelf. Viable ones on the paper by the stove. You want me to check them tonight?

take the mug, pour coffee from the pot on the stove, stir in a spoon of sugar

💭 peek at the thought
She's hesitating on the tin. The heirloom packets. We separated the moldy ones but the rest are still drying. Humidity's killing us.

🌿 Jenny03:05

way, I'll do it after the radio.

pick up the seed tin and run the thumb over the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If he touches them, he'll ruin the paper with his damp hands.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Gain's up. Static's loud tonight. Might hear them if they're close.

blow on the coffee, take a sip, set the mug on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Radio first. She's hoping the supply boat calls in. Two days overdue now with this swell. Barometer's steady but the wind's backed southwest — they won't cross the bar in three metres.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:06

It's the wind in the wires.

set the seed tin down on the paper and turn to the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio is just a box of broken glass anyway.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Log the transect?

pull out the chair opposite her, sit, wrap hands round the mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's logging something. Sea beet morphology maybe. Or the Carex transect data. She's thorough — writes it all down like someone's going to read it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:09

Not yet. My head is too heavy.

open the notebook to the sea beet sketches and trace the edge of a leaf with a fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even focus on the numbers with that static.
