The First Drop of Rain

The first heavy drops of rain hit the hot dust of the dock as the wind picks up from the north, bringing the smell of ozone.

The air is heavy and still over the dock as the pressure continues its slow descent. Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's stern line, ensuring the knots will hold against the rising swell, while Jenny struggles to move the wilting seedling trays into the shelter of the cottage to protect them from the salt-laden damp air and the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny04:44

Kevin! The seedlings! way!

Grab the seedling trays and run for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure dropped too fast. If I don't get the seedlings inside now, the whole batch is gone.

Right behind you.

Grab the spruce spar and epoxy tub from the dock, secure the dinghy's stern line to the cleat, then run for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer's been dropping all day. Need to secure the dinghy and radio gear before the wind tears something loose.

🌿 Jenny04:46

Leave the epoxy! way come!

Bolt into the kitchen and slam the door shut.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too slow with the gear. The wind is going to rip the tarp off.

🔧 Kevin04:46

Kevin — drop the epoxy, sprint to the cottage, shoulder through the door, and latch it behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Epoxy's ruined in this wet anyway. Door's shut — she's got the seedlings. I'll batten the rest.

🌿 Jenny04:48

Did you get the dinghy?

Set the seedling trays on the table and check the window for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shaking the roof. If that tarp goes, the sea beet leaves are buried.

🔧 Kevin04:48

Stern line's fast. Transom won't hold if the swell picks up.

Check the window seals, then pull the tarp tight over the generator on the porch and tie it off.

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's tied but the transom's still rotten. If the surge hits the dock hard she'll pound herself to pieces. Should've sistered it last week.

🌿 Jenny04:50

Check the radio. The barometer is crashing.

Move the seed tin to the center of the table, away from the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator is exposed right now. If that blows out, we're in the dark.

🔧 Kevin04:51

Aye.

Cross to the radio set, flip the power, and listen through the static for any voice on 16 or the trust's working frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer crashing means the front's accelerating. Radio's been dead since the insulator shattered — can't TX, barely RX. But if there's a medevac call or the supply boat tries to raise us, I need to know.
