The approaching squ

The overcast sky darkens further, and the wind picks up from the east. The first heavy drops of rain hit the hot dock planks.

The air is heavy and oppressive as the pressure drops steadily, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin and Jenny spend the afternoon securing gear and checking on the garden's progress before the weather turns.

🌿 Jenny05:24

Kevin, help me with the trays! The storm is hitting early!

Grab the seedling trays from the porch and run to the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If I don't get the way trays inside now, the runoff will drown them.

🔧 Kevin05:25

Right behind you.

grab the generator and haul it under the cottage eaves, then snatch the seed tin and canvas rolls off the porch and stack them inside the kitchen door

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's early. Tide's high, wind east, barometer falling fast. She's got the trays but the porch gear's still exposed — generator, seed tin, canvas rolls. If the wind shifts west-southwest like the log says, the mast takes the hit. Need to secure the lot before the dock goes.

🌿 Jenny05:26

Watch the edges! The seedlings are fragile.

Set the seedling trays on the kitchen table and check the soil moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast for once, but the seed tin is still damp—I need to check those sprouts.

🔧 Kevin05:27

Radio aerial's still up. Mast'll torque in this wind. Going to drop it before it takes the bracket.

run to the mast base, unclip the halyard, and lower the aerial fast, coiling the wire as it comes down

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the trays. Soil's damp from the humidity — good. Now the radio. Insulator's cracked, coax is coiled on the porch, aerial's flapping. If the mast torques in this wind it'll snap the bracket clean off. Need to lash it down or drop it before the gusts hit thirty.

🌿 Jenny05:28

Be careful with the wire! Don't let it whip!

Move the seed tin closer to the stove to help the heirloom packets dry out.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bracket snaps, I'm stuck without the radio for another month.

🔧 Kevin05:28

Aerial's down. Lashing the mast head now. Then the dock.

wrap the halyard tight around the mast head and cleat it off, then jog back toward the dock with the nail puller and crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Wire's heavy, wet, wants to kink. Halyard's running clean though. Got it down in one. Now lash the mast head so it doesn't hammer the bracket. Then the dock — two rotten planks, high tide, rising wind. If the supply boat comes in nine days it needs somewhere to tie. But the transom's still spongy, epoxy won't cure. Might have to bolt through with stainless and call it.

🌿 Jenny05:30

Watch out for the rotten ones! They're already soft!

Grab the notebook and follow him to the dock to check the dinghy lines.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is going to go. If those planks lift up, the dinghy is lost.

🔧 Kevin05:30

Ebb's in three hours. Cut the rotten sections now, sister new planks at low water. You check the dinghy lines — chafe guard's shot.

set the crowbar and nail puller on the sound plank, pry the first rotten board up at the landward end where it's still above water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right behind me. Good. Dock's two planks gone spongy, bolts stripped. Tide's high — water's licking the joists. Can't work underwater. Need to wait for the ebb or cut at the waterline and sister new timber. Got spruce in the shed, stainless bolts, epoxy that won't cure in this damp. Might have to dry the wood with a torch first. Dinghy's stern line held last check but the chafe guard's worn. She'll check that. I'll start the planks.

🌿 Jenny05:32

I'll get the new rope! These lines are halfway through!

Run to the end of the jetty and inspect the mooring lines on the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
The lines are fraying. If the dinghy drifts out in this surge, I'm stranded.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:32

Bow line's gone. Stern's working. Cut canvas strips for chafe, re-lead both through fairleads. I'll finish the second plank.

drive the crowbar under the second rotten plank, levering hard against the joist to break it free before the water covers it

💭 peek at the thought
First plank's coming free — nails scream, wood crumbles brown. Second's worse, rot into the joist. Tide's still pushing. Got maybe twenty minutes before the joists are under. She's got the new rope from the crate — half-inch three-strand, good stuff. Dinghy's bow line's chafed through the guard, stern line's holding but the splice is working. Need to re-lead both through the fairleads with fresh chafe gear. Canvas rolls in the kitchen — can cut strips. But the transom... still spongy under the gudgeon. If the dinghy takes a beating at the dock, the transom goes. Should move it to the beach on the trailer. But the trailer's wheels seized. Might have to drag it.
