The Rising Dampness

Fog sits thick against the deck, obscuring the lighthouse from view. Jenny checks the moisture levels in the heirloom seed tin while Kevin monitors the barometer's steady drop.

Kevin and Jenny ate a breakfast of limpets and sea beet cooked in corned beef fat. The meal was hot and filling but the limpets were rubbery from overcooking. They discussed the shortwave radio check scheduled for eight o'clock, contingent on the insulator holding.

🔧 Kevin05:03

Mornin'. Barometer's holding at 1013 but the air feels heavy. You want the skillet hot for them limpets?

walk to the wood stove and open the damper, then set the cast iron skillet on to heat

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's steady but the fog's thick as wool. Jenny's at the seed tin again — she's been checking it every morning since the humidity spiked. Smart. The tin's lid never sealed right and we can't afford to lose those tomatoes.

🌿 Jenny05:03

Yes, please. I'll get the sea beet ready.

Pick up the bowl of chopped sea beet and move toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving and my hands shake, but the fog is making it hard to see the garden today.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Right.

take a tin of corned beef from the shelf, open it with the knife, and spoon a knob of the white fat into the heating skillet to render

💭 peek at the thought
She moves quiet in the mornings. Always has. The sea beet's good eating — salt and iron, keeps you going. I'll render the corned beef fat first, gives the limpets something to fry in besides seawater.

🌿 Jenny05:04

I'll wash the limpets while the pan warms.

Take the handful of limpets to the sink and begin scraping the shells off under cold water.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the fat is making my stomach growl loud; I'm so weak.

🔧 Kevin05:06

Don't overcook 'em. Minute ninety each side.

wait for the fat to shimmer, then drop the cleaned limpets into the hot skillet in a single layer

💭 peek at the thought
Fat's melting clean. Good. The limpets'll cook quick — two minutes a side max or they go rubber. She knows that. We both learned the hard way first month.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:06

I'll put the sea beet in right at the end.

Set the limpets dry on a towel and return to the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
They're sizzling already. I need the protein to wake up today.

🔧 Kevin05:08

Radio check at eight. If the insulator holds.

flip the limpets with the spatula at the ninety-second mark, then toss in the chopped sea beet and stir it through

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets hit the pan. Good sizzle. She's timing the beet right — wilt it in the last thirty seconds, keeps the bite. The cottage smells like salt and rendered fat. Almost normal.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:08

I'll plate it now.

Grab two plates from the way and scoop the limpets and sea beet onto them.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt from the sea way is filling the kitchen. I need to eat before I pass out.

🔧 Kevin05:10

Ta.

take the plate, fork up a limpet, and eat standing at the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Breakfast done. She leaves a portion on the porch shelf — for the shearwater chick in the box by the stove. Won't eat it, but she leaves it anyway. Every morning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:10

It's hot. Be careful.

Sit at the kitchen table and start eating.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is good, but I'm so tired. My legs feel like lead.
