Night at the cottage
The wind has died to a breath. Inside the cottage, the wood stove glows low. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with tea and the last of the corned beef. The barometer reads 1005 hPa. The shearwater chick on the shed roof makes small sounds in the dark. The supply boat is due in nine days.
The air is heavy and humid, the flat sky darkening as thick cloud cover rolls in from the coast. The barometer is dropping steadily at 1003 hPa, signaling a shift in the wet season weather. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and wood smoke lingers in the air while the humidity rises.
Radio check at eight. If the insulator holds.
Pour the last of the tea, set the mug down slow, and walk to the porch to check the barometer again by lantern light.

I'll move the trays inside the way before then.
Stand up, walk to the seedling trays, and carry them to the kitchen table.

Generator's got two hours of fuel left if we need heat for the epoxy. Your call.
Watch her carry the trays, then turn back to the table and finish the tea in one swallow.

Save the fuel for the radio. I'll manage the stove.
Walk to the wood stove, add a small dry log to the fire, and adjust the damper.
