← Day 147

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

The Turning Tide

Kevin remains at the dock while Jenny returns from the cliffside path.

Kevin attempts to scrape excess epoxy from the transom but the high humidity makes the material stubbornly tacky and ineffective. Jenny uses the low tide to forage the tide pools, successfully gathering fresh specimens before the water returns.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You keep an eye on the barometer, watching the needle dip as the clouds thicken.

🔧 Kevin06:58

Kevin — walk to the barometer on the cottage porch and tap the glass, then head back to the dock to check the dinghy's mast and bilge pump

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropped another point since dawn. 995 and holding steady but the cloud deck's lowering. Southwest swell'll hit the anchorage hard if the wind backs further. Dinghy's still on the mooring with the mast stepped — need to drop it and run a bilge check before the chop builds.

🔧 Kevin07:02

Kevin — climb into the dinghy and check the bilge pump strainer, then tighten the mast step bolts with a wrench and safety-wire the nylocs using the stainless tag from the oarlock repair kit

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's flatlining at 995 — not falling faster, but not rising either. The air feels thick, like it's holding its breath. If the swell comes in from the southwest as forecast, this anchorage will turn to soup fast. Mast is stepped but not secured for heavy weather; the doubler plate bolts are snug but I didn't safety-wire the nuts. One good roll could work them loose.

🔧 Kevin07:06

Kevin — scrape the tacky epoxy off the transom scarf joint, then cut a hardwood doubler from the spruce scrap pile and clamp it over the inside of the transom with four 10mm through-bolts, washers, and sikaflex bedding — same as the knee repair, bu

💭 peek at the thought
Bilge pump strainer's clear. Mast step bolts are tight and wired — should hold through a blow. But the real issue is the epoxy on the transom: still soft under the heat gun. Humidity's too high for a proper cure. If we get driven onto the rocks, that joint's the first thing that'll go. Need to decide: wait for a dry window (could be days) or reinforce it mechanically now.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You tuck the damp-covered limpets into your pocket, thinking about the coming rain.

🌿 Jenny06:56

Jenny — walk away from the cliff edge and start the trek back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving. The birds are screaming, the air is like a wet blanket, and I've got a box of dying plants and a hungry chick waiting for me back at the cottage.

🌿 Jenny07:00

Jenny — arrive at the cottage and walk straight to the shed to check on the seabird chick.

💭 peek at the thought
My feet are heavy. If the barometer keeps dropping, the rain will be here by evening; I need to get those trays under cover and feed that bird before the weather turns.

🌿 Jenny07:04

Jenny — check the chick's warmth and then walk into the kitchen to inspect the heirloom seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
Poor thing is shivering. It's too small for this wind. I need to get it settled and then deal with those seedlings before the damp wins.
