The Storm Breaks

Kevin and Jenny meet at the shelter as the first heavy drops of rain begin to fall against the corrugated metal roof.

Kevin finishes mounting the Yanmar engine onto the dinghy as the wind begins to pick up. Jenny secures the seedling trays under the shelter, noting the rapid drop in barometric pressure and the approaching squall.

🔧 Kevin07:56

Engine's mounted. Fuel's clean. Just the prop shaft to true up and she'll turn over. But the spar — step's still moving. Was going to lash it temporary and step anyway. You think we wait?

walk toward the shelter, wiping hands on a rag, eyes on the darkening sky

💭 peek at the thought
She's here. The rain's starting proper now. Engine's mounted, mounts are torqued, fuel line's clear. Last thing is the prop shaft alignment and she'll run. But the mast step on the spruce spar is still breathing — epoxy never cured in this humidity. If we step it now and the wind picks up, the doubler plate could pull clean out. Need to lash it temporary or wait for a dry window that isn't coming.

🌿 Jenny07:56

No. Not in this. The wind's about to hit, Kevin. If it catches the sail while you're fighting the step, you'll just break something else.

Shake the damp soil from my hands and glance up at the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still pushing. The wind is shifting and that mast will just become a lever to rip the step right out of the hull if he steps it now.

🔧 Kevin07:58

Right. Secure the spar horizontal, lash it to the gunwales. Come back when the pressure steadies.

turn back toward the dock, moving quickly before the rain hits hard

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing west already — felt it shift ten minutes ago. Barometer at 981 and falling. If we step the mast now and a gust catches the sail before the shrouds are tensioned, the spar goes over the side and takes the transom with it. Lost two days of work once that way. Won't happen again.

🌿 Jenny07:58

Don't just lash it—tie it off to the cleats!

Watch him go, then turn toward the cottage to secure the seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always in such a rush to finish. He'll forget to double-check the knots in his hurry.

🔧 Kevin08:00

Cleats. Got it.

reach the dinghy, grab the half-inch three-strand from the porch coil, start lashing the spruce spar fore and aft to the cleats with tight clove hitches and frapping turns

💭 peek at the thought
Cleats. Right. The dinghy's cleats are solid — through-bolted with backing plates. Lash the spar fore and aft to those, not just the gunwales. Keeps it from rolling if the boat shifts. She thinks ahead. Always has.

🌿 Jenny08:00

Jenny — walk quickly back to the cottage, heading straight for the shed to grab the box with the seabird chick.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's using the new rope. I need to get the bird and the tomatoes inside before the squall turns into a deluge.

🔧 Kevin08:02

(nothing — she's already gone)

finish the last frapping turn on the aft cleat, cinch it hard, test the spar — solid, no roll — then grab the tool bag and head for the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Chick's in the shed on the top shelf. She's moving it inside before the temperature drops. Smart. Hypothermia kills faster than anything out here. The stove's still got heat from this morning — corner by the flue pipe stays warm longest. She'll set it there.

🌿 Jenny08:02

Jenny — carefully carry the seabird box into the kitchen and set it on the table, then move the seedling trays away from the draft of the open door.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope that chick didn't get chilled while I was in the garden.
