← Day 148

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Approaching Rain

The clouds thicken further as the first heavy drops hit the corrugated metal roof.

Kevin spends the morning working on the Yanmar engine, finally securing the mounts and checking the fuel system. Jenny focuses on the garden, carefully transplanting the potato seedlings into the prepared soil before the rain increases.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You move to the dinghy to ensure it is lashed before the wind picks up.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Kevin — walk to the dinghy at the end of the jetty, crouch to inspect the stern line splice and cleat hitch, tug hard on the standing part to test the long splice under tension

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's already backing west. If the pressure keeps dropping like this, the dinghy won't stay put on these cleats. Better check the stern line I spliced — new rope's only as good as the knot under it.

🔧 Kevin07:48

Kevin — pull a length of the new half-inch three-strand from the coil on the porch, cut a chafe sleeve with the knife, work it onto the bow line at the chock and seize it with sail twine

💭 peek at the thought
Stern line's holding. Splice didn't slip under a solid pull. Cleat's sound too — bolts still tight in the jetty timber. But the bow line's chafing where it rubs the chock. Old guard gave way months ago. If the swell comes up under this west wind, it'll saw through by morning.

🔧 Kevin07:52

Kevin — climb into the dinghy, prime the fuel bulb till it's firm, turn the key and crank the Yanmar

💭 peek at the thought
Bow line's protected now. Twine seizings are tight, chafe sleeve sits clean in the chock. Dinghy rides easier — bow's not jerking against the jetty with each small surge. Engine's mounted, fuel line's connected, battery leads are on. Only thing left is fire it up and see if she holds idle without the float needle weeping. Rain's steady now. Good. Masks the sound from the cottage.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You hurry to pull the shade cloth and protect the young plants from the downpour.

🌿 Jenny07:46

Jenny — pull the shade cloth over the tomato rows and secure the edges with heavy stones.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain hammers them now, they'll be washed right out of the soil. Too fragile for this.

🌿 Jenny07:50

Jenny — walk to the seed potato crate, grab a handful of tubers, and begin transplanting them into the grid.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is steady now. I can't stand the thought of those potatoes just sitting in the crate while the soil is this workable.

🌿 Jenny07:54

Jenny — wipe the mud off my hands on my trousers and walk toward the shed to check the seabird chick.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is aching and I can feel the hunger starting to gnaw. I need to check that bird before the damp gets into its feathers.
