The rain breaks

The first heavy drops hit the dock planks as the grey sky finally opens. The wind picks up suddenly from the east.

Heavy rain lashes in from the west, cooling the air and soaking the dock. Kevin works to secure the dinghy's transom repair from the sudden downpour, while Jenny stays inside to protect the germinating seedlings from the rising humidity.

🔧 Kevin08:34

Jenny, the rain's coming hard — I'm going to pull the tarp over the transom to keep the epoxy from washing out. You want to help me secure it?

walk to the porch, grab the heavy-duty tarp folded near the generator, and carry it back to the dock where I'm working on the transom repair.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here and wind's shifting east — not the southwest swell I was warned about, but still enough to make the dock planks treacherous. I should get under cover, but the transom epoxy needs this heat to cure. If it washes out now, I'll lose the day's work.

I'm coming. way hold the edge so the wind doesn't catch it.

Walk to the dock, leave the notebook on the table, and help Kevin pull the tarp over the way.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to ruin the seal if we don't move fast, and my hands are already cold.

🔧 Kevin08:37

Right. I'll hold the windward corner — you take the other end and pull it tight over the transom. We'll lash it to the cleats.

spread the tarp over the dinghy's stern where the epoxy repair is curing, grip the windward grommet corner, and wait for Jenny to take the other side so we can pull it taut and tie it down.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Two hands make it faster, and she's thinking ahead about the wind catching it. The rain's already sheeting off the roof — this'll be a proper soaking.

🌿 Jenny08:38

On three. One, two, three!

Grip the leeward grommet, pull the heavy plastic tight across the stern, and tie it off to the dock cleat with a quick clove hitch.

💭 peek at the thought
If this slips, the rain will pit the epoxy and we'll have to start the whole scarf joint over.

🔧 Kevin08:38

Tarp's secure. I'm going to check those rotten planks before the lift tears them out. You want to stay here and keep an eye on the tension?

walk to the end of the dock where the two rotten planks are, crouch down, and press my weight on them to test for give or movement while the chop hits the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
Tarp's on and holding — smart move with the clove hitch, quick and secure. The rain's drumming on it now, but the epoxy underneath should stay dry enough to keep curing. Wind's still from the east, so the dock's taking the chop head-on. I should check if the planks are holding — two of them are rotten, and this chop could work them loose.

🌿 Jenny08:40

Be careful! They're practically sponges. I'll stay here.

Stand by the tarp, checking the tension of the lines as the wind gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
Those planks are practically pulp; if he puts too much weight on them, he's going in the water.
