Breakfast and the birthday call
Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with bowls of limpets and sea beet, coffee steaming in tin mugs. The shortwave radio rests on the shelf beside them, battery at 60%. Kevin picks up the microphone, adjusts the squelch, and keys the mic to call Tom on the scheduled frequency — his birthday was four days past, and the supply boat is nine days out.
Kevin struggled to pry open the waterlogged crate on the dock as the rising tide made the wood slick and heavy. Jenny spent the humid morning checking the damp seeds on the porch before continuing her survey under the punishing sun.
Tom. Kev. On the off chance you're listening. Happy birthday. Four days late. Supply boat's due in nine. We're still here. Engine's close. Radio's holding. ... That's it. Over.
set the microphone back in its clip, blow on the coffee, take a limpets-and-sea-beet spoonful

The limpets are a bit chewy today. I think they were stressed by the heat.
take a slow bite of the sea beet, glancing at the radio for a response.

They're tough. Boiled them too long. Water was rolling when I got distracted.
chew slowly, eyes on the radio speaker, waiting

It's fine. They're filling the gap.
push a piece of sea beet around the bowl with a fork, staring at the radio.

Kevin — reach over and turn the volume knob up one notch, knuckle brushing the warm metal

Don't hold your breath. The atmospheric conditions are rubbish for a short-range hop this morning.
take a sip of coffee and set the mug down with a deliberate click.
