Afternoon Meal and Storm Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the rain intensifies. The smell of damp canvas fills the room while the wind rattles the windowpanes.

The humidity hangs heavy over the island, preventing the epoxy from curing on the transom repair. Kevin checks the dinghy's final fit while Jenny tends to the germinating seed trays in the humid kitchen air.

🌿 Jenny09:41

You're soaking. Get out of those clothes before you freeze.

Walk over to the stove and put a kettle on.

💭 peek at the thought
He smells like diesel and salt. I can tell he's exhausted just by the way he's standing, but he'll never admit it.

🔧 Kevin09:41

Mast's stepped. Sail's on. Engine held temperature under load.

peel off the oilskin jacket and hang it on the porch hooks, then strip the wet wool shirt and trousers, leaving them to drip on the porch floorboards

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Cold's setting in now that I've stopped moving. Mast's up, sail's bent, lines secure. The dinghy's ready — or as ready as she'll ever be.

🌿 Jenny09:42

Sit down. I've got some hot water going.

Grab a dry towel from the way and hand it to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's pushing himself too hard. If he catches a cold, I'm stuck here with the boat alone.

🔧 Kevin09:42

Thanks.

take the towel, scrub at my hair and arms, then pull out the kitchen chair and sit heavily, letting the stove heat hit my back

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't ask how it went. She knows. Just hands me the towel and puts water on. That's how we work.

🌿 Jenny09:44

The seedlings are doing well. The basil is finally pushing through.

Pour a cup of tea and set it on the table in front of him.

💭 peek at the thought
That's the sound of a man who's hit his limit for the day. I wonder if he's thinking about the boat, or if he's finally thinking about us.

🔧 Kevin09:44

Took long enough. Hope they make it past this week.

wrap the towel around my shoulders, pick up the tea, and blow on it before taking a slow sip, feeling the heat move through my chest

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching them closer than I am. Good. They need it — this humidity'll rot them if we're not careful.

🌿 Jenny09:46

They'll make it. I've got them sheltered.

Lean against the counter and watch him, my expression softening.

💭 peek at the thought
He sounds worried. I can handle the weather, but I can't handle the idea of those seeds failing.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:46

You've been keeping watch.

set the tea down gently, not finished, and look at her across the table, letting the quiet settle between us for a moment before speaking again

💭 peek at the thought
She's been doing this while I was down at the dock — checking on the chick, tending the trays, keeping the garden alive. I don't say it enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:48

Someone has to. The island doesn't wait.

Walk over and place a hand on his shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finallyicing the effort. Or maybe he's just tired of fighting it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:48

The boat's ready. Engine, sail, lines — all of it.

turn my head slightly toward her hand, not pulling away, letting the words sit in the steam and the rain on the roof

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand on my shoulder — warm, steady. The kind of touch that doesn't ask for anything. I've been carrying the leaving question for weeks. The mast's up. The engine runs. The boat's ready. Now it's just the asking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:50

It's a good boat, Kevin. You did a lot of work on it.

Squeeze his shoulder gently before pulling my hand back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the boat as if it's an exit strategy. Or a promise. I can't tell which.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:50

It'll take us both. In a following sea, or beating into it.

stand up slowly, towel still around my neck, and move to the window to watch the rain slash sideways across the glass, listening to the wind lift at the porch roof bracket — the one that's starting to crack under load

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it. Not just the bolts and the splice, but the hours, the cold, the second-guessing. She's not talking about leaving. Not yet. But she's here. And the boat's ready.
