The Humidity Trap

Heavy air sits in the kitchen as Kevin watches the barometer needle on the table. Jenny checks the damp sprouts in the heirloom trays while the heat resists the tacky surface of the transom epoxy.

Kevin test-runs the Yanmar engine under load at the dock, monitoring the temperature and oil pressure while the tide rises. Jenny stays at the cottage to carefully mist the seedling trays and protect them from the heavy humidity.

Yanmar's bled. Throttle's clean. Tide's coming up. Gonna run her at the dock under load — see if she holds temp and oil pressure. You want to come watch or stay with the trays?

walk to the dock with tool roll and oil can

💭 peek at the thought
Need to run the Yanmar under load today — tide's rising, barometer's steady at 980, wind's under 15 knots. If the sea trial holds, I step the mast tomorrow and we're mobile. Also need to ask Jenny plain if she still wants off this rock. She's been quiet about it since the chick.

I'll stay. Someone has to make sure the basil doesn't drown in its own steam.

Gently mist the seedling trays with a spray bottle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the machine. I can't leave these sprouts now, not when the humidity is this high—they'll melt if I don't watch the moisture.

🔧 Kevin09:18

Right. Back in an hour.

untie the dinghy stern line, step aboard, prime the Yanmar fuel lift pump, pull the starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
She's not answering the real question. Not yet. But she's staying close to the stove and the seedlings — that's her answer for now. I'll run the engine, get the data, then ask proper when I'm back.

🌿 Jenny09:18

Jenny — move the seedling trays a few inches further from the stove to avoid overheating.

💭 peek at the thought
That sound... it's too guttural. I hope the sleeve actually holds under load or he's just vibrating the whole boat into pieces.

🔧 Kevin09:20

(over the dinghy's side, low) Fuel's flowing. Idle's smooth. Bringing her up to half throttle now.

advance the throttle to 1500 RPM, monitor oil pressure and temp gauge, listen for irregular combustion

💭 peek at the thought
She adjusted the trays without a word — practical, not pulling away. That matters. Engine's turning over now. Need to watch the temp gauge and listen for knock.

🌿 Jenny09:20

Jenny — walk to the porch and lean against the railing, watching the vibration of the hull from a distance.

💭 peek at the thought
If he pushes it too hard too fast, that sleeve will shear. Please just hold, you stubborn piece of bronze.

🔧 Kevin09:22

(shouting over the engine) Holding steady! Temp's coming up clean!

maintain 1500 RPM, watch temp gauge approach 85°C, check for water flow from exhaust outlet

💭 peek at the thought
Oil pressure holding at 45 psi. Temp climbing steady — 72°C, 78, 82. No knock. No smoke. She's running clean. Let her sit at load for twenty minutes, then I'll know.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:22

(shouting back) Don't get cocky! Keep an eye on the pressure!

Smile faintly and sketch a quick, gestural study of the dinghy's wake in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He sounds almost happy. It's a strange sound coming from him lately.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:24

Pressure's steady! Forty-two hot! Water flow's good! Twenty minutes and I'll call it!

glance at the barometer on the cottage porch — still 980 hPa — then back to engine instruments

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. She knows engines. Pressure's steady at 42 psi now — normal warm drop. Temp 86°C and holding. Exhaust water's a solid stream. Twenty minutes at load, no alarms. This engine's ready for open water.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:24

Just don't push it to the limit! We need that engine for the supply boat, not for a trophy!

Close the notebook and walk back inside to check the seabird chick in the shed.

💭 peek at the thought
980 and steady. The air is too still. It's the kind of stillness that precedes a collapse.
