The Storm Breaks
The rain begins to lash the roof as the wind picks up from the east. You sit together inside, listening to the rafters rattle.
Kevin secures the cottage perimeter against the coming storm as the pressure continues to drop. Jenny focuses on moving the delicate heirloom seed trays to the warmest spot to protect them from the rising humidity and wind.
The east wind is hitting. I need to move the trays further from the window.
Lift the seedling trays and slide them toward the center of the kitchen table, away from the drafts.

Pull the cast iron skillet from the hook, set it on the stove to heat for the corned beef tin I left on the counter.

If it leaks, the seedlings will be soaked. I'll put the canvas over them.
Reach for a piece of canvas and drape it loosely over the trays to shield them from any drips.

Canvas holds. Skillet's hot.
Pry the corned beef tin open with the church key, tip the fat into the skillet, let it shimmer.

Smells better than the limpets.
Lean against the counter and watch the fat sizzle, rubbing my tired arms.

Limpets keep you alive. This keeps you human.
Fork the meat into the fat, break it up slow, let the edges crisp.
