Midday preparations
Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the heat peaks. The grey sky has begun to darken further over the north.
The steady rain continues throughout the morning, filling the water tank to its capacity. Kevin spends the time checking the radio equipment's integrity while Jenny manages the delicate seedling trays against the humidity.
The barometer is still dropping. If we're going to get the seeds in the ground, it has to be now, or we wait until the boat comes.
Put a pot of water on the wood stove to boil the limpets.

Ground's too wet. Seeds'll rot before they root.
Walk to the porch and check the barometer reading again, then look north at the sky.

I'm not planting them in a bog, Kevin. I'm planting them in the raised beds.
Pour the limpets into the boiling water.

West wall drains. Salt spray's the problem if the wind backs.
Pull the shade cloth roll from the porch corner and carry it toward the garden.

Then I'll double-stake the windbreaks. I'm doing it.
Grab the seed tin and a hand trowel from the shelf.

I'll hold the cloth while you stake.
Walk to the garden windbreak line, unfold the shade cloth, and brace it against the first post.
