Evening Meal and Radio Static

Kevin and Jenny are in the kitchen. A pot of water is boiling on the stove as the wind begins to pick up outside.

The air is heavy as the pressure drops steadily, signaling an approaching weather front. Kevin and Jenny spent the evening securing the garden and checking the dinghy's readiness before the wind turned.

🌿 Jenny11:41

The wind's picking up. We should probably double-check the tarp on the garden before it really hits.

Pour some pasta into the boiling water and glance at the seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. I can feel it in the pressure, and the basil is already flagging. I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin11:42

Aye. I'll run a line from the north corner to the shed ring. You got the south?

walk to the porch and grab the coil of new half-inch rope

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling. Wind'll be northeast by midnight if the pattern holds. Garden tarp's only got stones on the corners — needs lines to the wall brackets.

🌿 Jenny11:42

I've got the south. Just don't let the wind whip that line around your ankles.

Turn off the stove and step out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already in "fix-it" mode. It's the only time he's actually present.

🔧 Kevin11:44

Wouldn't be the first time rope bit me.

follow her onto the porch, coiling rope over my shoulder, and head for the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the line, not me. Smart. The gusts are already hitting the porch rail.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:44

Try not to make it a habit.

Follow him toward the garden, stepping carefully over the threshold.

💭 peek at the thought
He loves the martyrdom of the struggle. I just want the seedlings to survive the night.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:46

South bracket first. I'll take the north run.

cross to the south side of the garden, feeding rope through the grommets along the tarp's edge

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp's already billowing on the south edge. Stones won't hold past thirty knots. Need to cinch it to the wall brackets and the shed ring before the rain turns to horizontal.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:46

Slow down, Kevin. Give it some slack first or you'll rip the edge.

Walk to the south side to help him guide the rope through the grommets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. If he pulls the tension unevenly, he'll tear the grommets right out of the canvas.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:48

Slack first. Then tension.

ease the rope through the remaining grommets, letting the tarp settle before pulling tension on the south line

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Canvas tears clean when you snug it hard against wind load. Gotta let the tarp breathe before cinching.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:48

Better. Hold that tension for a second.

Kneel down and push the heavy stones firmer into the soil around the southern edge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening. Rare, but efficient. Now we just need to make sure the stones aren't shifting in the mud.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:50

South's good. Heading north.

move to the north side of the garden, feeding rope through grommets toward the shed ring

💭 peek at the thought
Stones bedded. South edge won't lift now. My turn on the north run — shed ring's solid, but the line'll chafe on the corner post if I don't fairlead it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:50

I'll check the perimeter stones while you're up there.

Crawl along the edge of the tarp, kicking the stones deeper into the earth.

💭 peek at the thought
Now it's just a matter of the knots holding. If the wind gusts over forty knots, the canvas will act like a sail and pull the whole thing up.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:52

Got a bit of hose in the bin for a fairlead?

reach the north edge, thread the rope through the final grommets, and walk toward the tool bin by the shed

💭 peek at the thought
Shed ring's holding. Need a fairlead — old hose section in the tool bin'd work. Keeps the line off the post edge.
