shelter from the storm

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the rain lashes down against the roof. The smell of damp wood and salt fills the small space.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets and sea beet while discussing the failure of the spruce mast. The humidity prevented the epoxy from curing properly, leaving the split at the mast step open and vulnerable as the storm moves in.

🌿 Jenny11:10

I've got the limpets and beet ready. We should eat before we lose the light completely. Also, Kevin... we need to talk about the spruce mast. It's failing at the step.

Put the pot of boiled limpets and chopped sea beet on the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks exhausted. I am too. The rain is loud, but the silence between us is louder. I can't let the mast go another day.

🔧 Kevin11:10

Aye. Mast first or food first?

walk to the table and pull out a chair

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the mast. The epoxy never cured in this heat, the split's still open, and I've been putting off recutting the tenon because my chisels are blunt and I'm tired. But she's also right about eating — light's going fast and I'm hungry enough to eat the tin cold.

🌿 Jenny11:12

Food first. You can't think straight on an empty stomach, and the rain is too heavy to go out there right now anyway.

Scoop the limpets and beet into two bowls and slide one toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's deflecting with a choice. If we wait, we'll just be tired and hungry when we argue about it.

🔧 Kevin11:12

Thanks.

pick up the spoon and start eating

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Hands shake a bit when the blood sugar drops. And the rain on the roof sounds like it's coming down sideways — no working on the mast in that.

🌿 Jenny11:14

The epoxy never cured. It's still tacky, and that split at the mast step is open. If we put the generator on it now, the whole thing will just shear off.

Sit down opposite him and start eating, watching his face for the reaction.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating. The tension is still there, humming. I need to be precise, no room for him to misunderstand the physics of it.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:14

Mm. Knew that when I laid it up. Heat killed the cure. Need to recut the tenon, find something for glue that'll hold in damp, and clamp it proper. Chisels are blunt though.

keep eating, chew slowly

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating facts, not blaming. That's rare. Most people would've pushed the generator up anyway and hoped. The split's at the step — worst place. Load goes straight through there. I need a fresh tenon, proper glue, and clamps I don't have. Or a different approach entirely.

🌿 Jenny11:16

You knew? Why didn't you tell me? We've been planning the power load around that spar for a week.

Set the spoon down with a sharp click against the bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He knew. He knew it was failing and he didn't say a word. He's treating the mast like a chore on a list instead of a structural disaster.

🔧 Kevin11:16

Didn't have a fix. Still don't. Waste of breath until I do.

set spoon down, wipe hands on trousers

💭 peek at the thought
She's angry. Quiet angry — the kind that sits in the chest. She's right to be. I should've said. But saying it out loud makes it real, and I didn't have a fix yet. Still don't. Just a problem and blunt tools.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:18

It's not a waste of breath to know our power source is sitting on a fracture, Kevin. It's called a risk assessment.

Lean back in the chair and cross arms, staring at him.

💭 peek at the thought
"Waste of breath." God, I hate that. I'm a scientist; the problem is the data, not the breath.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:18

You're right. Should've logged it. Didn't.

stand up, walk to the wood stove, stare at the firebox

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Risk assessment — that's the language of the job, the contract, the logbook. I've done a thousand of them on ships. Written them in blood and oil. But here it's just us, and the words feel like armor she's putting on.
