Seed Sorting and Engine Prep

Jenny hunches over the kitchen table, carefully brushing away mold from the heirloom tomato packets. Kevin sits opposite her, checking his notebook and reviewing the Yanmar engine notes for the morning's test.

Kevin spent the morning at the dock, focusing on the Yanmar engine. He performed a compression test and found the bore is functional, but the stripped threads on the housing bolts prevent him from securing the unit under load. Jenny worked in the garden, clearing the stubborn weeds by hand to prepare the beds for the heirloom seedlings. She managed to clear a significant patch, leaving the soil ready for planting once the supply boat arrives.

How many viable?

sip coffee from the tin mug, eyes on the notebook page for Yanmar test sequence

💭 peek at the thought
She's still at it. Hours on those packets. The tip of my tweezers snapped yesterday and she didn't even flinch — just kept working with her fingers. Steady hands. Steadier than mine some days.

🌿 Jenny23:37

Enough to start if the air stays dry. I need to get them in the ground before the boat arrives, regardless of the forecast.

Jenny brushes a final speck of grey mold off a seed and places it into a small dry container, her movements precise and impatient.

💭 peek at the thought
Half of them, maybe more. The humidity is a thief, but these seeds are holding on. If I spend another day watching them rot instead of planting them, I'll be just another botanistuinguing a graveyard on this island.

Beds aren't ready. Wall's low on the seaward side. Wind'll flatten seedlings.

tap the notebook — engine test sequence: compression, oil pressure, temp at load, prop shaft runout

💭 peek at the thought
Impatient. She's been saying that for weeks — before the boat, before the storm, before the next thing. The garden wall's only two courses up on the seaward side. Beds aren't ready. But she's got that look.

🌿 Jenny23:39

Then we'll use the shade cloth as a windbreak. I would rather have a bruised seedling than a dead one.

Jenny stands up abruptly, clutching the seed container to her chest, and walks toward the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks about the wind, I'm thinking about the life dying in my hands. If I wait for the perfect day, I'll be documenting own but dust and salt.

🔧 Kevin23:40

Reinforce the corners first. I'll do it after the engine test.

set the mug down, pick up the tool roll and head for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Bruised seedling, dead one. She's not wrong. The shade cloth's heavy-duty, tied off to the garden stakes — might hold if I reinforce the corners. But she's moving fast. Too fast. The boat's nine days out if it comes at all. She's racing something.

🌿 Jenny23:41

I'll start the clearing. way make sure that engine holds today.

Jenny kneels in the dirt of the garden, beginning to clear a patch of weeds with her bare hands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the mechanics, I'm looking at the biology. We're both waiting for a break.

🔧 Kevin23:42

Back in two hours. Don't lift the wall stones alone.

walk down the path to the dock, tool roll over shoulder, mind already on the compression gauge

💭 peek at the thought
Bare hands. No gloves. Dirt under the nails she keeps trimmed short. She's clearing the seaward bed first — the one that takes the full hit. I'll test the Yanmar hard today. Full throttle, quarter turns, hold it. If the prop shaft runs true and the oil pressure holds, we've got a dinghy that can make the mainland in a pinch. If not... I've got the bronze bar stock for another sleeve. The lathe's on the boat. Not here.

🌿 Jenny23:43

I know what I'm doing.

Jenny rips a clump of stubborn grass from the earth, her fingernails darkening as she works.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'll break my back, but it's the seeds that're breaking if I don't move now.
