Dawn at the cottage

The morning sun hits the kitchen table as the tide begins to ebb from the dock. The air is still and warm, 26°C, marking the start of the day.

The steady rain continues, filling the water tank to its capacity. Kevin spends the morning checking the rat traps and securing the pantry, while Jenny focuses on the delicate seed trays in the damp air.

🌿 Jenny00:47

Eat before they get cold. I'm going to check the engine again after you finish.

Place the plate of limpets on the table and stretch my arms, wincing at the pull in my lower spine.

💭 peek at the thought
way back is screaming, but the engine actually sounds right today. I need to check those seeds before the humidity spikes again.

🔧 Kevin00:48

Aye. Engine's bolted solid. You'll find the same thing I did.

pick up a limpet, shell and all, and eat it standing at the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring that left side again. Won't say it, won't ask. Just watch the plate go cold while she goes to poke the Yanmar like it'll bite her.

🌿 Jenny00:49

Just don't get cocky when the tide starts acting up.

Pick up a fork and poke at a limpet, watching the seed tin on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure until the salt eats through the bolts. I hope those seeds hold.

🔧 Kevin00:50

Never been cocky a day in my life. Just know what the bolts held.

eat another limpet, slower this time, watching her watch the seed tin

💭 peek at the thought
Cocky gets you drowned. She knows that. So do I.

🌿 Jenny00:51

Metal rots. Seeds rot faster if you blink.

Stand up slowly, a hiss escaping my teeth, and walk to the shelf to check the seal on the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just about the metal. It's about the life inside the tin.

🔧 Kevin00:52

Tin held. Lids tight. Desiccant's still blue.

finish the last limpet, wipe fingers on the rag, push back from the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the seal because she doesn't trust the air here. Doesn't trust me to have caught it. The tin's been dry three days — I checked it myself at dawn. But she blinks, she verifies. That's the rhythm.

🌿 Jenny00:53

Good. I'm not losing these to a damp morning.

Run a thumb over the metal edge of the tin, checking for any hairline fractures.

💭 peek at the thought
If the desiccant is blue, the humidity isn't winning yet.

🔧 Kevin00:54

You won't. They're dry.

stand, take the empty plate to the sink, run cold water over it

💭 peek at the thought
Hairline fractures. She's looking for what isn't there because she's waiting for the thing that breaks. The back, the tin, the engine, me. I've seen the way she tests each morning — not trust, not distrust, just... accounting.
