waiting for the rain

You and Jenny sit at the table as the first heavy drops hit the corrugated metal roof.

Steady rain continues to hammer the island as the water tank reaches its maximum capacity. Kevin spends the evening preparing the dock ring for final attachment while Jenny manages the germinating seed trays in the damp warmth.

🌿 Jenny02:11

We should check the seal on the tank again tomorrow.

Reach for the notebook and sketch the curvature of a sea beet leaf in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is going to overflow before the boat arrives, and I'm still hungry for something besides salt.

🔧 Kevin02:12

Mm. Seal and the overflow screen. Debris backs up fast in this kind of rain.

pour the last of the tea into her mug, then mine

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's steady now. Tank's full — 400 litres — but she's right to check the seal. Salt air eats rubber. I'll put it on the list with the injector seat and the dock bolts. Her pencil moves quiet. Sea beet leaf. She sees things I don't.

🌿 Jenny02:13

I'll clear the screen once the rain lets down.

Take a slow sip of the tea and watch the water blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the mechanics of failure, never the weight of it.

🔧 Kevin02:14

Screen first. Tank seal can wait till morning light.

set my mug down and reach for the radio handset, switching it on to catch the 2000Z weather broadcast

💭 peek at the thought
She watches the window like she's reading something written on the glass. The tea's cold by now — she doesn't mind. I should've warmed it.

🌿 Jenny02:15

Just make sure you don't slip on the bolts.

Lean back and listen to the static hiss between the weather reports.

💭 peek at the thought
Morning light feels a lifetime away when the sky is this color.

🔧 Kevin02:16

Boots have grip. Besides, the shim's holding. Cedar's swollen tight.

adjust the squelch, waiting for the forecast to cycle round again

💭 peek at the thought
She remembers the bolts. The shim work yesterday — I cursed loud enough for the gulls to hear. Her voice is light but her eyes stayed on the window. She's not talking about the bolts.

🌿 Jenny02:17

I hope the shim doesn't warp under the pressure.

Trace the grain of the wooden table with a finger, thinking of the seeds in the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything swells until it breaks, including the wood and us.

🔧 Kevin02:18

It's not the shim I'd worry about. Mortise walls are old. Oak's sound but the iron's eaten deep.

let the radio run, forearm braced on the table, listening for the shipping forecast

💭 peek at the thought
Cedar doesn't warp much. Swells, holds, dries slow. She knows wood. She's asking about the ring bolt — whether the mortise will hold through winter storms. Whether we will.
