Evening before the storm

The clean light has turned a bruised purple, and the breeze has grown noticeably cooler. Inside, the sound of the rat scratching in the pantry competes with the first low gust of wind rattling the eaves.

The heat of the wet season lingers overnight as the air remains perfectly still. Kevin focuses on fine-tuning the Yanmar engine components while Jenny tends the germinating seedlings in the shaded kitchen.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Kevin, check the latch on the garden gate, the wind is turning.

stand up quickly, grab the seedling trays, and move them to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than the barometer shows; if I don't get those trays inside now, the salt spray will ruin them.

On it.

Walk out the porch door and cross to the garden gate, testing the latch against the wind pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest, dropping temperature fast. Gate latch has been sticky since the swell warped the post. She's moving the seedlings — smart. Means she expects this to last.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Jenny — arrange the seedling trays on the center of the kitchen table, away from the draft, and check the soil moisture with a finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the wind. If that gate catches, the whole garden wall will be in the way.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Kevin — force the latch bolt back and forth with the heel of my hand, clearing the corrosion enough to seat it home, then pull the gate shut hard and drop the bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
Latch bolt is seized halfway. Salt and swelling. Need to work it free before the gate slams and snaps the hinge. Gate's already shuddering.
