The Humidity Weight

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch watching the overcast clouds thicken over the north ridge. The air is heavy with moisture, and the first drops of rain hit the plastic tarp.

The morning starts heavy and humid as the tide begins to climb the shore. Kevin inspects the Yanmar engine and dinghy rigging for signs of salt damage, while Jenny manages the germinating seed trays and ensures they are protected from the damp morning air.

🌿 Jenny03:15

The tide is coming in. We need to move these inside.

stand up and carry the heirloom seed trays to the high shelf in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop. If that wind shifts southeast, the salt will ruin everything in minutes.

🔧 Kevin03:15

Right behind you.

walk into the kitchen, unplug the shortwave radio and coil the power cord, lift the set onto the high shelf beside the seed trays, then step back out onto the porch and check the generator tie-downs on the deck

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming hard. Good she's moving the trays — those seedlings won't take a soaking. I should secure the radio gear and check the generator lashings before the wind picks up.

🌿 Jenny03:17

The generator is secure, I've seen it.

place the trays on the highest shelf, away from the draft of the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the things that can break, while I'm checking the things that can grow.

🔧 Kevin03:20

I'll walk the dock lines and the dinghy painter. Back in five.

step off the porch and walk down the path to the dock, pull the dinghy painter tight and cleat it with a second turn, check the chafe guard on the bow line, then walk the dock planks checking each cleat and ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's already checked the generator. Good. The rain's hitting steady now. I'll check the dinghy lines and the dock while I'm out there — better now than in the dark.

🌿 Jenny03:21

I'm checking the water tank before it really starts.

walk to the back of the cottage to inspect the 400-litre tank for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is bruising too fast. If the wind turns, the salt spray will get through the window seals.

🔧 Kevin03:22

(nothing — just a nod as I pass the corner of the cottage)

finish checking the last dock ring, turn and walk back up the path toward the cottage, pause at the back wall to glance at the tank seams where Jenny's looking, then continue to the porch and pick up the 10mm spanner from the tool shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been solid but worth a look with this much rain coming. I'll finish the dock check and head back — the Yanmar could use a quick look-over before the humidity gets worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:23

The tank is holding. 394 litres.

run a hand along the base of the tank to feel for any dampness or weeping seams.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for something to fix while I'm looking for a reason to stay.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:24

Good. Engine next.

walk down the path to the dock, climb into the dinghy, crouch over the Yanmar and run the 10mm spanner over each mounting bolt checking torque, wipe the gearbox dipstick and sight the oil level, sniff for fuel at the injector lines

💭 peek at the thought
394 litres — good. Tank's tight. Rain's hammering the porch roof now. I'll give the Yanmar mounting bolts a final torque check while the engine's cold and the air's still enough to hear a leak.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:25

Don't stay out too long, the wind is shifting.

walk back inside the kitchen to check the moisture in the' seedlings again.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the metal he doesn't see the sky changing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:26

Coming in.

climb out of the dinghy, secure the washboard, walk back up the path to the cottage and step onto the porch, shake the rain off my sleeves, pull the door shut behind me

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest — that'll push swell into the cove. Bolts are holding at 35 Nm. Oil's clean, level good. No fuel weep at the injectors. She's right. Time to get back.
