Evening at the Ridge

The oppressive heat finally breaks as the sun begins to dip. You and Jenny climb toward the ridge to find the stone circle.

Kevin and Jenny explored the old shrine to investigate weathered carvings on the stones. While Jenny meticulously sketched the lichen patterns in her notebook, Kevin identified a clear letter 'E' carved into one of the more resilient rocks. They returned to the cottage as the light faded, tired and hungry.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Look at the lichen on this one—it's almost masking the carving.

Jenny kneels in the grass, opening her notebook, and begins sketching the weathered stones.

💭 peek at the thought
My legs are screaming, but the light on these stones is perfect. I need to capture this.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Names are worn past reading on most. Trust the ones on the east side — deeper cuts, less weather face.

walk to the nearest stone on the east side of the circle and run my fingers over the carving, squinting at the letters

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's finally lifting. Good. My legs feel heavier than they should at forty-one — hunger and the climb both. She's already working, pencil moving. I should eat something when we get back. Water too.

🌿 Jenny04:03

The salt eats everything here. It feels like the island is trying to erase the history.

Jenny leans in, her pencil moving rapidly across the paper as she maps the texture of the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the wind has been scouring the west face for decades.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Not erasing. Keeping what matters. The deep cuts stay.

crouch beside her, forearms on knees, and study the name she's sketching — tracing a letter with a calloused fingertip without touching the paper

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and wind. Forty minutes in black water taught me that rhythm — the sea takes what it wants. She's mapping texture like it matters. Maybe it does.

🌿 Jenny04:05

It's a battle against the elements, and the elements are winning.

Jenny pauses her pencil, looking at the deep shadows in the carving before returning to the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so practical. He doesn't see the loss, just the survival.

🔧 Kevin04:06

The deep cuts held a hundred winters. That's not losing.

pull my water bottle from the belt loop, unscrew it, and drink half in long swallows — wipe my mouth with the back of my hand

💭 peek at the thought
She sees losing. I see what held. Different lenses. The engine holds because I know which bolts to torque and which to let breathe. Stone's no different — the deep cuts breathe.

🌿 Jenny04:07

I hope the stones are more resilient than the garden.

Jenny shifts her weight, shading the deep grooves of the letters with her pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
A much winters. I'm not sure if these seeds will last ten.

🔧 Kevin04:08

Garden's got me. Stones don't need nobody.

stand, roll my shoulders, and look out along the ridge toward the cliffs — squinting at the light on the water

💭 peek at the thought
Garden's alive. Stones are dead. Different rules. She knows that. She's testing something — me, the island, the staying.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:09

They need someone to remember they were ever here.

Jenny stops own, her pencil hovering over the page as she watches the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything here wants to be own until it starts dying.

🔧 Kevin04:11

I remember.

turn back to her, weight shifting to my heels — one hand finding the pocket where the 'E' stone sits, fingers closing around it through the fabric

💭 peek at the thought
That's the hook. She's not talking about stones. She's talking about us. About Edward. About the life we didn't build here. The garden half-weeds. The sensory paths never laid. She wants witness.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:11

We should head back before the light fails completely.

Jenny closes her notebook with a soft thud and stands up, brushing the grass from her knees.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it like it's easy, but the wind is picking up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:12

Yeah. Coming.

fall in beside her on the descent, stride shortening to match hers — boots finding the worn path between gorse and stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. Good. The hunger's a hollow place now, and the walk back is steep in spots. Coffee waits. Real coffee, from the jar. One cup each.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:13

I'm starving. We should boil those limpets.

Jenny walks in silence, eyes tracking the distant silhouette of the cottage below.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting heavy. I can feel the pressure in my joints.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:14

Skillet's hot. Five minutes.

lengthen my stride slightly as the cottage comes clearer — the chimney stack, the porch rail, the tarp over the seed tin — one hand still on the 'E' stone in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets and corned beef fat. The skillet's still greasy from dinner. Fast, hot, protein. Exactly what this hollow needs.
