Engine test and cliff sketches
Kevin is at the dock preparing the Yanmar for a load test; Jenny is at the north cliffs sketching sea beet morphology on the northern shelf.
Kevin started the Yanmar on the dinghy and found a miss on cylinder one at idle. Jenny returned from the north cliffs, logged her sea beet sketches, and checked the seedling trays.
You stand at the dock in the warm on-and-off rain, the dinghy rocking gently at its lines. The Yanmar sits mounted, fuel lines connected, the spare injector seat blank in your pocket awaiting its final pass. You check the oil, prime the fuel, and grip the starter cord — frayed near the handle but holding.
Kevin — check oil dipstick, prime fuel pump lever three times, grip starter cord and pull

Kevin — let engine warm at idle, listen to each cylinder, note the miss on number one

You sit on a wind-sheltered ledge of the northern shelf, notebook braced on your knee, pencil moving over the sea beet cluster you mapped at low tide. The tide is high now, waves washing the base of the plants, but the salt glands glisten on the upper leaves. Rain spits, then stops. You sketch fast, capturing the crimson tips before the light shifts.
Stay put, you little thing.
Close the notebook, stand up, and walk back toward the cottage.

Jenny — enter the cottage, set the notebook on the table, and check the humidity on the seedlings.
