Evening Meal

The limpets are tender but chewy from the salt, and the flat sky thickens further over the island, promising the rain.

The humidity is heavy as the clouds thicken overhead, signaling a coming downpour. Jenny focuses on the germinating seed trays near the warm stove while Kevin checks the pantry for further signs of rat activity.

Yanmar's clean under load. Cylinder one firing proper.

walk up to the cottage porch and set the bucket of seawater down by the door

💭 peek at the thought

Engine's singing clean now. Miss on cylinder one's gone. That injector seat blank held true. Rain's coming — can smell it in the wind shift. Good night for the radio check at 0800 if the aerial holds.

🌿 Jenny05:59

Good. The humidity is starting to spike anyway.

Jenny looks up from her sketch, wipes a pencil smudge off her thumb, and nods toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought

He's back before the rain. The engine is actually holding today.

Kevin — pull out the chair opposite her and sit, hands on the table, watching the pencil in her fingers

💭 peek at the thought

She's been at those sketches all afternoon. Salt glands, she called them. The stove's got a decent bed of coals — could throw the limpets on if she's hungry. Or just let the silence sit. She doesn't need me narrating the obvious.

🌿 Jenny06:01

Limets are almost done. Wait a minute.

Jenny finishes the shading on the leaf margin, closes the notebook, and stands to check the pot.

💭 peek at the thought

He's staring. I need to finish this leaf before the light goes.

Kevin — lean back in the chair, listening to the rain start on the roof

💭 peek at the thought

The pencil stops. Notebook shuts. She moves to the stove like she's been doing it for years, not months. The limpets, the sketches, the seed trays — she's got her systems. I've got mine. Engine's done. Radio check at 0800. Friday on the ebb if the high holds.

🌿 Jenny06:03

It's coming down hard now.

Jenny lifts the pot off the wood stove and begins to drain the water into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought

There it is. The island always gets the last word.
