Pre-dawn tide watch

Kevin and Jenny stand by the dock planks as the tide begins to pull away from the shore. Kevin monitors the falling barometer while Jenny checks the tension on the dinghy's new stern line.

The wind picks up from the north, chilling the damp air as the clouds thicken over the ridge. The tide is pulling out rapidly, and the pressure is continuing to drop. Kevin and Jenny retreat toward the cottage to secure the gear and the seedlings before the weather sets in.

Cleats are sound. I checked the through-bolts yesterday. Spring line next?

glance at the barometer on the cottage porch, then walk to the dinghy's bow to check the spring line tension

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's down two millibars since 0400. Fall's accelerating. She's thorough with the line — good. The new splice will hold if the cleats don't pull.

🌿 Jenny08:57

Check it twice. The pressure is dropping faster than the tide.

Trace the edge of the sea beet sketch in my notebook with a dirty thumb, feeling the grain of the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the hardware while the sky is literally bruising over.

🔧 Kevin08:58

Spring's good. Bow cleat's solid. Getting the kedge anchor from the shed.

walk to the tool shed, pull the kedge anchor and fifty meters of chain, carry it to the dinghy's bow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Two millibars in twenty minutes. That's not a front — that's a bomb. Spring line's tight. Bow cleat's holding. Need to get the anchor out as backup.

🌿 Jenny08:59

Easy with the chain. The dock planks are soft today.

Squat down on the edge of the jetty, watching the water recede from the northern shelf of the tide pools.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. He's going to drop it and scar the wood.

🔧 Kevin09:00

Planks held the engine. They'll hold chain. Setting the kedge thirty meters out on the port quarter.

carry the anchor and chain to the dinghy's bow, pay out chain hand over hand, then row the dinghy out thirty meters on the port quarter and drop the kedge anchor

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the shelf. Smart — the water's pulling fast, exposing rock that was covered at slack. Means the ebb current's stronger than predicted. Chain's heavy but the planks held the Yanmar's weight last week. They'll take it.

🌿 Jenny09:01

It's set. But the wind is picking up from the north.

Stand up and wipe my hands on my trousers, looking at the thickening clouds over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's securing the boat like he's afraid it will run away without him.

🔧 Kevin09:02

North wind against ebb. Bar at 1014. Boat won't make the crossing if it drops another five. Cottage shutters?

pull the dinghy back to the dock, tie off the kedge line to the stern cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, then walk toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
North wind against ebb tide. Chop building at the bar. Supply boat won't cross if it's fighting that. Barometer's at 1014 now — four down in an hour. She sees it too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:03

I'll get the seedling trays inside. They're already damp.

Walk quickly toward the cottage, clutching the notebook tightly under my arm to protect it from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
If it drops five more, the sea will be a wall for that hull.

🔧 Kevin09:04

Shutters and porch. I'll meet you at the cottage.

secure the dinghy's bow line with an extra turn on the dock cleat, then jog up the path to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Seedlings first — she's right. Thirty cells of heirloom stock. Lose those and the garden's a year back. Shutters next. Porch gear. Generator fuel. The list runs itself.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:05

I'm coming.

Reach the cottage door and fumbled with the latch, my fingers shaking from the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the wind. The air is turning cold.
