The Calm Before the Rain

The air is stifling and still as the evening begins to fade. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table, the protected seeds tucked away, listening for the wind.

Kevin spent the afternoon finalizing the Yanmar engine housing and checking the dinghy's integrity. Jenny focused on the heirloom seed trays and organizing the garden notes, preparing for the upcoming supply boat in eight days.

0400 to 0800's mine. You take 2000 to midnight. Wake me if the glass moves more than two millibars an hour or the wind backs past west.

pour two mugs of water from the tank, set one by Jenny's elbow

💭 peek at the thought
The stillness is worse than wind. Barometer's dropped four millibars since noon and the needle's lazy — front's slowing down, piling up. We'll get the dirty side of it. Generator's topped, shutters dogged, seeds sealed. Only thing left is the radio watch and waiting.

🌿 Jenny10:21

I've got it. Just don't forget to check the generator oil before you go under.

Drink some water and lean back in the chair, glancing toward the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already in survival mode. It's the only time he feels certain—when there's a checklist and a deadline. I'm starving, but the water is lukewarm and tastes of the tank.

🔧 Kevin10:22

Checked at dawn. Clean, full. Diaphragm's the question — ran it two hours at noon, another hour just now. No smoke, no knock. I'll dip it again at 0330 before watch.

settle into the chair opposite her, roll a cigarette from the tin on the table, strike a match on the table's edge

💭 peek at the thought
She remembers the oil. Good. I checked it at first light — clean, full — but the diaphragm's new and I don't trust new parts until they've run twenty hours under load. Generator's been humming steady since noon. Another hour won't hurt.

🌿 Jenny10:23

You're obsessing. The diaphragm is fine, Kevin.

Rub my temples and look out the window at the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He loves the sound of his own precision. It's a shield. I can smell the tobacco and the stale air of the cottage; it's closing in on me.

🔧 Kevin10:24

Mmm.

exhale smoke toward the ceiling, eyes on the barometer's needle through the curling grey

💭 peek at the thought
Obsessing keeps engines running. She knows that. She also knows I haven't slept more than three hours straight since the barometer cracked 1000. The diaphragm's fine — probably. But "probably" sinks boats.

🌿 Jenny10:25

I'm going to make something with the limpets. I'm starving.

Stand up slowly, feeling the light-headedness, and move toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's staring at that needle like it's an oracle. I can't stand the silence of it—the way we just exist in the gaps between technical reports.

🔧 Kevin10:26

Fat's hot if you want it. Bread in the tin behind the flour sack.

push back from the table, pull the notebook toward me, flip to a fresh page, sketch the barograph trace from memory — 1014 at noon, 1010 at 1600, 1006 now

💭 peek at the thought
She's been on her feet since first light — garden, seeds, sketches, the climb up the mast yesterday. We both are. The limpets are boiled and sitting in the bowl on the counter. Corned beef fat in the skillet from lunch. She'll make it taste like something other than survival.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:27

Don't smudge the ink.

Reach for the tin of bread and set the limpets into the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's sketching in my notebook. He doesn't ask, he just... integrates. I should be annoyed, but I'm too hungry to fight for the page right now.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Kevin — pen pauses mid-stroke, wait for the nib to stop bleeding into the fibre, then add the wind vector — WNW, steady 30, gusts to 45 at last radio check

💭 peek at the thought
Ink's waterproof. She knows that too. She's stalling — letting the silence stretch so I'll fill it. Won't work. The sizzle sounds good. Fat popping. Means the pan's hot enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:29

The pressure is dropping too fast.

Drop the limpets into the hot pan, the hiss filling the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
way's already mapping the storm before it even hits the glass. I'm just trying to get the salt off these shells.
