Afternoon Heat

The air is heavy and still as the clouds continue to thicken over overhead; Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen to discuss the coming storm.

The heat remains oppressive as the trade wind pushes across the island. Kevin focuses on the final mechanical checks of the Yanmar engine on the dinghy while Jenny manages the germinating seedlings in the kitchen shade.

Boat's not making it through this. Five days out, maybe seven. We batten down tonight.

Set the kettle on the wood stove and pull two mugs from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The air's thick enough to chew. Barometer's been dropping since noon — she feels it too, or she wouldn't be in here with that look. Storm's close now, not coming.

🌿 Jenny13:04

I need to check the seedlings again. If the pressure drops fast, the rain will drown them.

Set the notebook down on the table and walk out to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always worried about the schedule and the engine, never the salt-rot doing to the wood.

🔧 Kevin13:06

Take the tarp from the porch. I'll secure the generator and radio mast.

Walk to the back door, grab the coil of new half-inch rope and the roll of self-amalgamating tape from the shelf by the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Good. The trays are on the table by the stove — she'll get them under cover before the gutters overflow.

🌿 Jenny13:06

I'll get the tarp. The seedlings are too young for a direct downpour.

Grab the heavy-duty tarp and head toward the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so focused on the gear he doesn't see the wind is shifting.

🔧 Kevin13:08

Hold the stove open a bit. If the rain comes early, I’ll fire up the generator and keep the radio on the main power.

Open the stove door slightly, place a pot of water on the flame to keep the air warm, then walk to the generator rack to check the oil level and tighten the fuse block.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s off to cover the garden. I’ll keep the stove warm and the radio tuned. Need to check the generator fuel and the radio coil before she crosses the porch.

🌿 Jenny13:08

I'm getting the garden covered now. The wind is picking up.

Spread the heavy-duty way over the seedling trays and weight the edges down with stones.

💭 peek at the thought
he's worried about the power, but the soil is going to turn to mush.

🔧 Kevin13:10

Radio mast guys first. Then the dock lines.

Walk to the radio mast at the corner of the cottage, pull the guy lines taut one by one, and cinch each turnbuckle with the adjustable wrench from my belt.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's freshening — hear it in the chimney draw. She's got the garden covered. Now the mast guys need checking before the coax shakes loose again.

🌿 Jenny13:10

I'm finished with the garden. I need to check the rain tank before it really opens up.

Wipe the grit from my hands and head back inside the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
the pressure is dropping faster than the barometer says.
