The Foggy Departure

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the thick fog obscures the view of the lighthouse. Kevin checks the Yanmar engine's mounting bolts while Jenny observes the tension on the new dinghy sail rigging.

Kevin and Jenny inspected the dock planks at high tide to assess the structural rot. Kevin identified several soft sections near the waterline, while Jenny struggled to evaluate the integrity of the support pilings. They agreed to replace the damaged wood once the supply boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny12:37

The tension is uneven, Kevin. It'll snap if the wind shifts.

Reach out to touch the main sheet, checking for slack in the damp canvas.

💭 peek at the thought
The fog is too thick to see the northern shelf, but I can feel the moisture in the air; Kevin is obsessing over those bolts while the wood under our feet is rotting.

🔧 Kevin12:38

Mounts are tight. Port side had a hairline weep on the gasket — wiped it clean, nothing since. You want to ease the sheet and re-lead it fair?

torque the last two Yanmar mounting bolts to 35Nm, wipe down the port gasket face with a rag, step back from the engine

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the sail — uneven tension on damp canvas is asking for a blown leech. The Yanmar's holding steady though, mounts are solid after the through-bolts. Let her work the rigging while I finish the bolt check.

🌿 Jenny12:38

Ease it a bit. The lead is catching on the cleat because the wood warped from the salt.

Pull the line to release the tension, watching the sail shiver under the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always focused on the machine, but the dock is literally turning soft under our boots.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Cleat's sprung. I'll plane it fair after breakfast. For now, take a turn round the samson post — it'll hold the angle.

watch her work the sheet onto the samson post, eye the sail shape as it fills, rest a hand on the warm Yanmar cylinder head

💭 peek at the thought
Salt-warped cleat. Should've caught that when I stepped the mast. She's got a good eye for the running gear — better than she lets on. The sail's damp enough it'll stretch another inch once the sun hits it; better to set it fair now than fight it underway.

🌿 Jenny12:40

It'll hold for now, but the rot is too deep in these planks to ignore.

Wrap the rope twice around the samson post, pulling it taut until the canvas stops flapping.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a plane of wood fixes a structural failure, but the whole jetty is screaming from the tide.

🔧 Kevin12:42

Aye. Next low tide I'll cut the bad ones out. If the supply boat shows, I'll have them bring lumber. If not, the spruce on the ridge is ready.

crouch at the dock edge, probe the suspect planks with the nail puller tip, feel the rot give way like wet cardboard

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Two planks on the landward side are punky to the core — I've been putting it off because it means hauling timber from the beach at low tide, and the supply boat's due in five days. Could ask them to bring a couple of 3x12s. Or mill the windfall spruce up on the ridge; it's seasoned enough.

🌿 Jenny12:42

The own won't hold if the tide surges again. We need to reinforce this before the boat arrives.

Step back from the way edge, shifting my weight to the solid section of the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already planning for the failure, but I'm just looking at how the salt eats the wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:44

Pilings first. Ring plate after. Low tide in forty minutes — I'll wade out and sister the landward two.

straighten, roll the stiffness from one shoulder, walk the dock length to the landward pilings and crouch to inspect the waterline rot

💭 peek at the thought
She's calling it "the own" — means the dock. Or she means the Yanmar. Or both. Tide surge with the front building out west would lift the whole jetty if the landward pilings let go. The ring's already loose in its mortise. Should sister the pilings and through-bolt the ring plate while the water's slack. Got the half-inch three-strand and the stainless through-bolts from the crate. Two hours work, maybe three.
