Evening Preparation

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden. Kevin and Jenny gather in the cottage to plan for the supply boat arrival in five days.

Kevin wrote a letter to Tom at the kitchen table while Jenny boiled limpets for breakfast. The rat trap was checked and found empty, then reset with fresh corned beef bait. The Yanmar engine on the dinghy was tested under load at the dock and ran clean.

Jenny, the boat’s late, the rain tank’s full, and the garden’s still a mess. I’m going to write to Tom tonight, but first I’ll get the dinghy’s final test done so we’re ready when the boat finally comes.

make note: “Draft letter to Tom – ready for tomorrow” in notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The sun’s low angle makes the garden look golden, but the real light I need is the words I’ll say to Tom.

The engine doesn't matter if the seeds rot before we leave, Kevin.

Trace the edge of a sea beet leaf, checking the moisture level with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the boat and the engine, while the soil is literally breaking under my fingernails.

Engine's done. Tested clean under load. If the boat shows, we leave. If it doesn't, the seeds keep.

walk to the kitchen shelf, check the heirloom seed tin seal and the drying packets on the highest shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The seeds are the lifeline. The engine's just the way out.

🌿 Jenny13:16

They aren't cargo. They're life.

Take the tin from the shelf, feeling the damp metal against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks like the seeds are just cargo, like they aren't my grandmother's ghost.

🔧 Kevin13:17

They’re not cargo, Jenny. They’re the only thing that keeps this place from becoming a ghost.

set the seed tin on the table, open it, and scatter a handful of seeds onto the stove’s heat‑sensitive surface, letting the steam lift the scent of earth.

💭 peek at the thought
He understands the truth in her words now, but the weight of that truth drags on the skin of his hands.

🌿 Jenny13:18

Don't scatter them on the stove, you'll kill the enough.

Pull the tin away from the heat and close the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being poetic again because he's tired, and I'm hungry.

🔧 Kevin13:18

Fair enough. My mistake.

pick up the scattered seeds from the stove surface, return them to the tin, and set it back on the highest shelf away from heat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Heat kills viability. My hands are still thinking like a mechanic, not a gardener.

🌿 Jenny13:20

It's fine. We need to eat the limpets.

Pick up the bowl of boiled limpets, the steam fogging my glasses.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careless with the things that can't be re-machined.
