Day 179, Morning

The fog begins to lift as the heat of the wet season rises. Kevin and Jenny meet at the kitchen table to plan the day's chores before the sun peaks.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the dinghy under load, finding it ran smoothly with no overheating. Jenny inspected the seedlings, noting they were dry but still viable. Both awaited the supply boat’s arrival.

🔧 Kevin12:44

Morning. Engine's ready for a real test. Want to take the dinghy out past the headland, see how she holds under way. Back before lunch if the wind doesn't turn.

pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove, set one in front of Jenny, sit at the kitchen table

💭 peek at the thought
The fog's burning off slow. Jenny's at the table already. Good. Means she's thinking same as me — get ahead of the heat. The Yanmar's bolted down, propshaft true, sleeve fitted. Today's the day we actually run it proper, not just idle at the dock. Need to tell her the plan straight.

I'll stay. I need to finish the northern shelf sketches and the seedlings are looking parched.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, open the notebook to the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to test the engine again while the dock is literally rotting under our feet. I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin12:47

Suit yourself. I'll take the handheld VHF. If the engine misses or the tell-tale stops, I'm coming straight back. Sketches can wait. Seedlings can't.

pull the VHF from the shelf, clip it to my belt, grab the spare kill cord from the hook by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's not coming. Not a surprise, not really. The sketches matter to her. The seedlings matter more. But the dinghy test needs two — one at the tiller, one to watch the engine, the tell-tale, the exhaust colour. I can do it alone. I've done worse alone. But I'd rather she was there.

way watch out for the swell near the shelf. The tide is dropping fast.

Watch him out the door, then stand up and move the boiled limpets to the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the engine is the only thing Keeping us alive here.

🔧 Kevin12:48

Thanks. I’ll stay close to the engine till we’re back. I’ll keep the engine cool, watch the oil temp. If it spikes, I’ll pull back before the swell rolls in.

tighten the engine’s oil cap, set the timer on the stove for the limpets, fire up the stove to keep the pot going while I head out, cue the dinghy with a shortwave ping to the supply boat for ETA.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tossing a warning like a lifeline. The swell near the headland can mean a lot if the dinghy’s a bit light. I’ll keep a close eye on the water line, slow the engine, keep the tiller steady. Will make a note in the notebook if I have to cut the run short. She’s moving limpets—fine food, but I’m already hungry.

way don't push it too hard right away.

Sit back down, pick up a limpet, and start sketching the salt glands on the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the machine he can't see the island eating the wood.
