Morning Heat and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny sit at the porch table as the trade wind pulls at the plastic tarp. Jenny checks the moisture in the heirloom seed tin while Kevin inspects the Yanmar housing bolts for signs of corrosion.

Dawn breaks over a clear island with a steady trade wind cooling the heat. The tide is receding, exposing the northern tide pools for foraging while the supply boat is still five days away.

Bolts are clean. Sleeve's seating true. No salt bloom on the threads.

Wipe the last housing bolt with a rag, glance at the torque wrench setting, then stand and stretch. Walk down the porch steps toward the dock where the dinghy rides the mooring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Good. The tin's seal was never perfect and the humidity here eats everything. I should've built a proper dry box months ago. The bolts look clean — bronze sleeve's holding, no weep at the housing. Three days clean running. Let her work the seeds; I'll finish the check and get the dinghy in the water before the wind shifts.

Check the tension on the mast again later. The wind moved it last night.

Jenny closes the seed tin with a sharp click and picks up her pencil to begin sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf she found yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are still too damp; if I plant them now, they'll just rot in that acidic soil I hold.

Will do. Shrouds felt tight at dawn but I'll run a hand over them at the step.

Step into the dinghy from the dock, settle weight carefully. Pull the starter cord — engine catches on the second pull, idles clean. Let it warm while checking the tell-tale stream over the side.

💭 peek at the thought
She felt the shift too. Mast bracket's still slightly skewed from the storm — through-bolts held but the alignment's off a degree or two. Won't matter under reefed sail, but I'll check the shroud tension and the step when I'm out there. She's already moving to the sketch. Good. The notebook's filling up.

🌿 Jenny21:14

Don't go out too far. The current is coming in fast.

Jenny leans over her notebook, her pencil capturing the intricate veins of the salt artist on the sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine holds for the northern shelf, I can finally get those samples before the tide turns.

🔧 Kevin21:16

Staying inside the reef. Forty minutes out, forty back.

Cast off the bow line, engage forward gear at low throttle. Ease out past the dock, steering a course parallel to the southern shoreline, keeping the reef to starboard. Watch the temp gauge, the tell-tale, the oil pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Flood tide pushes hard around the point — can see the rip lines forming off the reef already. Not a day for open water. I'll stay inside the reef, run the engine at load along the southern shelf, back before the turn.

🌿 Jenny21:16

Keep an eye on the horizon. If the wind picks up—

Jenny pauses her sketch, looking out at the line where the blue meets the blue.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too clear today; you can see the kelp swaying like hands down.
