Evening Prep

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden as you meet at the cottage to prepare the evening meal and check the water levels.

Kevin and Jenny eat boiled limpets and sea beet for dinner as the air pressure drops. They prepare for the supply boat arrival in five days while noting the persistent presence of a rat in the pantry.

The tank is still over three-quarters full. We should be careful with the wash tonight.

Wash the boiled limpets in cold water and set them on the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands ache from the sketching, and the smell of salt and limpets is starting to get under my fingernails.

Limpets are sweet this time of year. Fat'll carry the flavour.

wipe hands on rag, pull out cast iron skillet, set it on the wood stove to heat

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's holding. Good. Supper's simple tonight — limpets and whatever's left of the corned beef fat. Need to check the rat trap line before dark, then post Tom's letter when the boat comes. The envelope's still on the table. Two lines isn't much, but it's more than nothing.

way don't burn them. We need the nutrients.

Open the notebook to the sketch of the sea beet morphology and check the pencil pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about the food like it's the only thing that matters, while I'm thinking about the salt glands on those leaves.

🔧 Kevin21:48

Won't. Hot pan, thirty seconds a side. Done.

drop a spoonful of corned beef fat into the skillet, wait for it to shimmer, then lay the limpets in single layer

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Overcook limpets and they turn to rubber, lose what little goodness they've got. Quick sear, just enough to wake the fat.

🌿 Jenny21:50

Pass the plates.

Reach for two plates in the cupboard and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the fat hitting the iron is the only thing filling this room.

Kevin — flip limpets with a fork at the thirty-second mark, then slide them onto two plates, divide the pan juices between them

💭 peek at the thought
Simple rhythm. She sets the table, I work the pan. Works.

🌿 Jenny21:52

Thanks.

Take a small bite of a limpet while looking out the window at the overgrown garden.

💭 peek at the thought
It's quiet, but I'm still thinking about the way the salt crystallized on the leaves.

Eat while it's hot.

sit opposite her, crack the crust on my own limpet, chew slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the garden again. The wall I raised, the beds she's coaxing life into. The sensory garden we talked about eleven months ago — still half weeds, half promise. She doesn't say it, but I hear it in the silence: we said we'd build something here. Mostly I've just kept the engine running.
