Evening Nightfall

Kevin and Jenny sit at the wooden table as the evening breeze dies down. The smell of salt and smoke lingers in the air.

The night remains calm and dry as the summer heat holds over the island. Kevin and Jenny finish their boiled limpets and sea beet meal, resting before the supply boat arrives in five days.

Barometer's still falling. Southwest swell'll hit by morning.

push back from the table and walk to the porch to check the radio aerial tension

💭 peek at the thought
The breeze is gone. Air's gone still and heavy — that pressure drop isn't kidding. She's quiet. Been quiet since the limpets. Don't know if it's the boat, the rat, or the letter still sitting on the table. Probably all three.

I'll check the lines on the dinghy after I finish these sketches.

Jenny stands up, wipes her hands on her apron, and walks to the kitchen to inspect the drying sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If the swell comes early, I need to secure the dinghy again and check the tank level.

The bow line's the one that matters. Stern held on the last blow.

pick up the letter from the table, turn it over in my hands, then set it back down face down

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling. The sketches are done — saw her close the notebook at the cliffs. She's avoiding the letter. Avoiding the porch. Avoiding me.

🌿 Jenny21:56

The bow line is fine as long as the cleats are solid.

Jenny stops sketching, looks up from her notebook, and traces the edge of a sea beet drawing with her finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the structural integrity while I'm worried about the roots.
