Broken cord and returning botanist

Kevin stands on the dock holding the broken starter cord, the dinghy engine silent behind him. Jenny approaches from the woods path, notebook tucked under her arm, sweat-stained and hungry. The tide laps higher against the pilings. A fish run ripples the shallows. The barometer continues its slow fall.

Kevin and Jenny returned to the cottage after inspecting the waterlogged crate. They ate cold boiled limpets for a late lunch. Kevin went to the workshop to search for a replacement starter cord, while Jenny reviewed her sea beet sketches.

Back. Find anything useful in the crate?

walk toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's back from the woods. She's got that look — focused, tired, the notebook full. The starter cord's snapped in my pocket, engine dead in the water. Four days to supply boat. Might be rope in the crate for a new cord, or I can braid something from the old stuff. First, food. Then fix what's broken.

🌿 Jenny22:30

Just salt and some old rope. The crate is empty.

wipe sweat from my forehead and step onto the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's asking about the crate again while I'm still thinking about the sea beet morphology.

🔧 Kevin22:32

Rope's likely shot if it's been wet that long. Spring line's new three-strand — could sacrifice a meter if the braid's right. Come on, limpets are boiled from lunch. Cold but edible.

walk to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Empty crate. Salt and old rope — the rope's probably the same brittle stuff we found before, no good for load. Starter cord needs something with give, doesn't rot. Might have to cannibalize the dinghy's forward spring line if it's new three-strand. Or check the workshop for starter cord remnants. Food first. She's hungry, I'm hungry. Limpets need cooking.

🌿 Jenny22:32

I'll check the rope tension after I eat.

follow him toward the way, clutching the notebook tight against my side.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always thinking about what to replace instead of what's actually there.

🔧 Kevin22:34

Pot's on the stove. Fork in the drawer.

enter the cottage and set the broken starter cord on the workbench

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the spring line tension — smart. If the starter cord fails again, we're rowing. Four days to supply boat, weather holding for now. Barometer steady at 1030. She's clutching the notebook like it's the only thing keeping her upright. The sea beet sketches, the salt glands. She's thorough. I'm not. Never have been.

🌿 Jenny22:34

Thanks.

set the notebook on the table and head for the pot of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can taste the salt in the air.

🔧 Kevin22:36

Kevin — walk to the workshop and rummage for starter cord or small-diameter rope

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating standing up. The notebook sits open on the table — salt gland cross-sections, precise lines, measured annotations. She doesn't waste motion. The limpets are cold, rubbery, but protein's protein. I should check the workshop for cord stock while she eats. Maybe the old lawnmower pull cord, or the generator's spare. If not, the spring line's half-inch three-strand — I can unlay a strand, re-braid it tighter. Takes time. Time we have.

🌿 Jenny22:36

(silent)

lift a cold limpet with the fork, staring at the rubbery texture before taking a bite.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of boiled salt is heavy today, but I need the protein.
