Evening Meal and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny gather around the cast iron skillet to prepare the boiled limpets and the remaining rations. The air is beginning to cool, though the barometer remains steady and high.

Kevin and Jenny ate a dinner of boiled limpets and corned beef inside the cottage to escape the punishing heat. They spent the evening monitoring the germinating seeds and preparing for the supply boat arrival in three days.

Skillet's hot. Corned beef fat first, then the limpets. Two portions each.

Set the cast iron skillet on the wood stove, spoon corned beef fat into it, and add the boiled limpets to warm through.

Evening meal. Simple work. Good.

🌿 Jenny23:36

I'm not hungry.

Jenny sits at the kitchen table, watching the fat sizzle in the pan.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is so heavy it feels like it's pressing against my skin. I want to eat without tasting the salt.

🔧 Kevin23:38

Eat anyway. Long night ahead.

Slide a portion of limpets onto a plate and set it on the table in front of her, then fill my own plate and lean against the counter to eat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been picking at food for days. The heat, maybe. Or the quiet.

🌿 Jenny23:38

Just a bit.

I pick up the fork and poke at a limpet, watching the steam rise in the stagnant air.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't eat, I won't have the strength for the ridge tomorrow. My body is folding against itself.

🔧 Kevin23:40

Salt helps. Replaces what you sweat out.

Keep eating, standing at the counter, watching the radio's power light blink steady green.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll eat three bites and push it away. I've seen it.

🌿 Jenny23:40

I know.

I take a small, tired bite of the limpet, chewing slowly while looking at the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just chemistry. He doesn't see the weight of the island in the room with us.

🔧 Kevin23:42

Tomatoes up?

Wipe the fork clean on a rag, set the empty plate aside, and pour water from the tank into two mugs.

💭 peek at the thought
The seedlings are the only green she looks at anymore.

🌿 Jenny23:42

They're holding.

I reach out to touch the soil in the seed tray, checking for the first hint of green.

💭 peek at the thought
The shade is helping, but the heat hasn't broken. I need to check those sprouts.

🔧 Kevin23:44

Good.

Set a mug on the table near her hand, take the other to the porch door, and stand in the doorway watching the light fade over the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Holding. That's her word for surviving.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:44

It's quiet tonight.

I take a sip of the water, watching Kevin's back in the doorway.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is still mostly weeds. I'm still just a guest here in my own life.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Barometer's still high. Three days out.

Rest a hand on the doorframe, thumb finding the winch scar on my forearm through the shirt sleeve.

💭 peek at the thought
No wind. No boat. Just us and the heat fading.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:46

I hope it comes on time.

I lean my head against his hand, looking down at the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days until the boat. Three days until I stop feeling like I'm disappearing.
