Evening Meal and Preparation

The two of you sit at the table eating limpets as the sun begins to dip. The tide is starting to turn inward.

Kevin spent the afternoon in the heat attempting to secure the dinghy lines but struggled with the brittle rope and exhaustion. Jenny focused on the garden, successfully identifying several plant species and checking the seedling trays. The pressure is beginning to shift as the dry heat holds.

🔧 Kevin00:38

Barometer's still falling. Four millibars since this morning.

eat the last limpet, wipe fingers on a rag, pick up the coffee jar

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are good — sweet, briny, better than anything from a tin. The newspapers sit on the porch drying. I should read them tonight, see what the world's been up to while we've been here. But the light's going and my eyes are tired.

🌿 Jenny00:38

The pressure is steep. We should secure the shade cloth before the wind picks up.

Set the plate down, stand up, walk to the porch to look at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If it keeps dropping that fast, the boat won't come in two days. I need to check the roof again.

🔧 Kevin00:40

Aye. New rope's on the porch. I'll get the corners.

stand up, grab the coil of new half-inch three-strand from the porch, walk to the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. That drop doesn't lie. Front's coming in hard overnight. The shade cloth'll shred if we don't tie it down proper.

🌿 Jenny00:40

I'll check the tank levels one last time while you work.

Follow him to the garden, watching the shade cloth ripple in the rising heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already moving. If the storm hits early, those seedlings will be washed out of the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:42

Tank was two-ninety-three this morning. Should be fine.

climb the garden wall, pull the shade cloth taut at the northwest corner, tie a quick bowline to the anchor stake

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been holding. Rain caught us last week. But she's thorough — checks everything twice. Good habit. The cloth's already lifting at the edges, catching the breeze like a sail.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:42

I'll keep an eye on the radio in case the wind shifts too fast.

Walk back to the rear of the cottage, head for the 400-litre rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
Two-ninety-three is enough if the rain holds, but the sky looks like bruised fruit.

🔧 Kevin00:44

Radio check at dusk. Usual frequency.

move to the northeast corner, pull the cloth tight, wrap the rope twice around the stake, finish with two half-hitches

💭 peek at the thought
She'll check the tank, then the radio. Both need doing. The aerial insulator held through the last blow — new porcelain, self-amalgamating tape. Should hold this one too. But I've seen "should" fail before.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:44

I'll be at the radio if you need me.

Reach for the level gauge on the tank to check the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the knots. The island doesn't care about his knots.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:46

Right.

walk to the southeast corner, haul the cloth up, secure it with a trucker's hitch for tension

💭 peek at the thought
Two corners down. Southeast and southwest left. The wind's freshening — can feel it shifting, cooling. Smells like rain and ozone. Front's moving faster than the barometer said.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:46

(quiet)

Note the level in the log, then wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
293 litres. If the boat doesn't come, I'll be rationing by next week.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:48

Kevin — move to the last corner, pull the shade cloth hard against the gust, tie it off, drop down from the wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet. Always quiet when the weather turns. Like she's listening to something I can't hear. The tank log's thorough — every day, same time. Discipline I don't have.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:48

The air is changing. Let's get inside.

Walk back to the kitchen, grab the notebook and the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now. I can smell the salt and the rain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:50

Dinghy lines need checking.

walk to the dock, inspect the forward spring and stern line, tug each to test the hold

💭 peek at the thought
Air's gone metallic. Pressure dropping in my chest too — old familiar squeeze. Front's close now. She's moving the notebook and seeds first. Priorities straight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:50

Don't stay out there. The pressure is dropping.

Stand on the porch, watching the clouds roll in over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays out there too long, he'll get soaked when the surge hits.
