MORNING day 192

The heat is heavy as the sun climbs higher. Kevin and Jenny discuss the plan for the supply boat arrival in two days.

The morning heat is intense as the dry season holds over the island. Kevin spent the morning checking the dinghy's engine and securing the dock lines, while Jenny focused on the northern cliffs to monitor the tide pools and collect sea beet samples.

The own is dropping fast. If they don't show in two days, we need to prioritize the water over the garden.

wipe sweat from my forehead and check the moisture level of the sea beet seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the water level will be dangerously low by next week and I can't let these own die.

Tank's at three hundred two. Garden can survive on grey water if we're careful. You and me can't.

check the rain tank gauge again and wipe condensation from the dipstick for a second reading

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. Four millibars since sunset and still falling. Clear sky means nothing out here. If the boat gets held up another week, 302 litres between two people with no rain — that's the real clock.

way we'll use the runoff from the kitchen, but I'm measuring every drop.

pick up my pencil and start sketching the cross-section of the sea beet's salt

💭 peek at the thought
way's always looking at the math of our survival, never the potential of the Life in the dirt.

Sea beet'll handle the grey water. Tomatoes won't. Peppers neither.

walk to the kitchen table and peer over her shoulder at the sketch, coffee mug in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning the rationing. Good. Means I don't have to say it. The seedlings on the table — tomato, pepper, basil, lettuce — they'll need something. Grey water's got soap, salt, grease. Sea beet might take it. The rest won't.

🌿 Jenny00:08

Then we'll adapt. I'm not losing the whole crop just because the water is salty.

sharpen the pencil with a pocketknife, focusing on the precision of the lead.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so focused on what will die he can't see what is actually fighting.

🔧 Kevin00:08

There's a twenty-litre jerrycan behind the generator. Clean. Been saving it.

set the mug down on the table's edge, careful not to shake her hand

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the engine bolts. That's why the garden exists at all. Also why the letter to Tom only has three lines. We adapt around the things we won't say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:10

I'll use it for the heirloom seedlings first. They're the most vulnerable.

close the notebook and look out the window at the shimmering heat.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one of us is thinking ahead, even if it's just a plastic bottle.

🔧 Kevin00:10

Check the radio at noon. French trawler might have eyes on the channel.

step out onto the porch and scan the horizon, hand shading eyes against the glare

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty litres buys the seedlings three days, maybe four. The barometer's still falling. Sky's too clean. That copper taste in the air — front's building offshore. Boat's two days out if it left on schedule. If it didn't...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:12

I'll check. But if it's silence, I'm starting to ration the limpets.

stand up and walk toward the shortwave radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wayler doesn't see them, we are just ghosts on a rock.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:12

Try 6215 first. Trawler fleet works that frequency.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, listening to the static hiss

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets and corned beef. Coffee's down to the last jar. Flour's gone — rats got it. We've eaten worse on a stalled ship. The radio crackles to life as she tunes it. Static mostly. This time of day the ionosphere's thick.
