The Evening Cool

You meet at the cottage as the sun dips, and the air finally begins to move.

Kevin and Jenny inspected the dinghy's stern line at the dock and confirmed the old rope is dangerously brittle. They agreed to replace it with the new three-strand rope from the crate before the tide turns, but made no further progress on the swap during this brief check.

Kevin — lean against the porch frame, arms crossed, watching the path from the cliffs

💭 peek at the thought
The air shifting means the heat's finally breaking. Good. My shoulders are knotted from hauling on that brittle rope all afternoon — hands still sting where the fibers snapped back. Jenny's been at the cliffs since midday. She'll have data, maybe limpets. I should've eaten earlier but the stove felt like betrayal in this heat. Now the light's going sideways across the porch and I can breathe again.

The pressure is falling. We need to check the lines again.

wipe the sweat from my brow with my forearm and close the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping, but he just looks like he's waiting for me to fail.

🔧 Kevin00:54

Yeah. Falling fast?

push off the porch frame and walk toward the dock, wiping hands on thighs

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's been dropping since noon — four, maybe five millibars now. The kind of drop that means wind by morning. Dinghy's still on the mooring with that transom scarf joint untested under real load. And the dock lines... I only got the forward spring sorted before the rope gave out. Stern line's still the old salt-crusted stuff.

🌿 Jenny00:54

Fast enough to worry. If the wind doesn't hold, the dinghy goes out.

follow him toward the water, stepping over a loose stone.

💭 peek at the thought
way enough to bring a gale before the supply boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin00:56

Stern line's the weak point. Old rope's brittle as glass.

reach the dock and crouch at the stern cleat, running fingers along the chafed line where it leads to the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Wind doesn't hold — that's the problem. It'll clock around southwest by midnight if this pattern holds, and the fetch across the bay puts the dinghy broadside to three-foot chop. The transom joint held at idle. Hasn't seen a following sea with weight in the stern. Should've tested it properly today. Should've sistered the dock ring mortise last week. Too many should'ves.

🌿 Jenny00:56

I have the three-strand from the crate. We need to swap it before the tide turns.

crouch beside him and point to the fraying fibers.

💭 peek at the thought
I have new rope in the crate, but he hasn't even looked at it.
