Night falls on the dropping glass

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage kitchen as darkness settles. The air is still and hot, 34°C. The barometer on the wall reads 1030 hPa and dropping. No wind. The seedling trays are weighted down on the table. A bowl of boiled limpets sits covered. The shortwave hisses static. They eat in silence, listening for the first gust.

The heat remains brutal throughout the night as the air pressure begins to drop despite the initial calm. Kevin and Jenny rest in the cottage, monitoring the barometer and preparing for the supply boat's arrival the following day.

Eat the limpets. Protein holds better in heat.

Sit at the table, fork a limpet from the bowl, chew slowly while watching the barometer needle.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's suffocating. Barometer dropping with no wind means something's building offshore. She's not eating much — never does when the pressure turns. I should've checked the generator fuel line before dark.

The barometer is falling. We need to secure the dock before the tide turns.

Set down the fork, walk to the window to check the shimmering air over the north shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the storm hits before the boat arrives, the seedlings are in trouble.

Dock first. Then dinghy. Generator fuel line after.

Push back from the table, grab the LED headlamp from the shelf, clip it on, walk to the porch door and pull on boots.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Dropping pressure, clear sky — wind'll come from the southwest by midnight. Dock bolts need checking, dinghy lines doubled. My legs don't want to move but they will.

Take the epoxy kit for the seaward bolts. The wood is turning to mush.

Pick up the notebook and the seed tin, follow him out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to the engine again while the sky is literally bruising.

Epoxy's in the crate by the generator. Bring the tarps too — cover the seedlings if the spray comes over the wall.

Step off the porch onto the path, headlamp beam cutting the dark, stride toward the dock with the epoxy tub tucked under one arm.

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy won't cure right in this heat but the bolt won't hold another tide. Cedar shim and oversized washer bought time — not much. She's bringing the seed tin. Smart. If the surge takes the dock, the garden's next.

🌿 Jenny01:54

I'll get the tarp. Just make sure the boat doesn't drift out.

Grab the roll of heavy-duty tarp from the porch, move toward the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt spray hits those trays, the whole season is gone. I can't lose this batch.
