← Day 194

the dock · day 194 · evening

Evening approaches the island

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the salt-washed wood. The trade wind picks up, carrying the scent of the coming northern shelf.

The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the dock as the air shimmers. Jenny leans her full weight into the bolt head, her shoulder braced against the metal to keep the oversized washer flush against the softening, rotting wood. Kevin stands steady in the dinghy, his arms locked as he applies constant downward pressure, ensuring the epoxy seats deep into the fibers.

🔧 Kevin02:30

Kevin — walk to the dinghy at the end of the dock, grab the spare timber and bolts from the porch on the way

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting north. Good — blows the heat off the cottage. Bad — means the supply boat's fighting a head sea if she's coming at all. Radio's been dead quiet on Tom's frequency all afternoon. Might as well sister that port knee while the light holds.

🌿 Jenny02:30

Kevin, watch your step on the jetty—the wood is soft as a sponge today!

wipe the excess epoxy from the bolt with a GR and press the oversized way down into the wood, using full body weight to seat it.

💭 peek at the thought
The artwork is curing too fast in this heat; if I don't get this way set now, the whole joint will be a mess.

🔧 Kevin02:32

Aye. Keeping my weight on the dinghy.

step into the dinghy from the jetty's solid end, brace against the transom, and start fitting the sister knee to the port gudgeon with the spare timber and through-bolts

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The seaward planks drink the tide and spit it back soft. Good she's on the bolts — epoxy won't hold in punk wood without mechanical bite. I'll sister the knee from the dinghy side, less weight on the jetty.

🌿 Jenny02:32

Don't torque the bolts yet! Let the epoxy take to the grain first.

wipe a bead of sweat from my eye with the back of a dusty hand and check the alignment of the washer.

💭 peek at the thought
If he puts too much leverage on that frame before the epoxy sets, he'll pull the bolt right through the rot.

🔧 Kevin02:34

Not tightening. Just fitting dry first.

drill pilot holes through the new sister knee and existing transom, test-fit the through-bolts with washers, then set the timber aside to let Jenny's epoxy work on the dock bolts

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — epoxy needs bite time in this heat. Smart. I'll drill the bolt holes clean, fit the sister knee dry, then bed it proper when the dock bolts have grabbed.

🌿 Jenny02:34

Good. I need to see if this way holds the tension anyway.

scrape a bit of cured epoxy off the wood and press the washer heavily onto the bolt head.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's thinking about the dry fit, but the heat is making the epoxy way before I can even spread it.

🔧 Kevin02:36

Want me to hold it?

stay in the dinghy, sister knee and bolts laid out ready, watching the jetty connection

💭 peek at the thought
She's testing the dock repair while I've got the knee ready. Right call — no point sistering the dinghy if the jetty lets go under her. The epoxy's thick in this heat, slow to kick. She'll need to hold that washer a spell.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:36

Yes, just keep pressure down. Don't move until I tell you.

lean my shoulder against the bolt head to keep the washer flush against the rotting wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If he holds it steady, I might actually get the washer to bite before it turns gummy.

🔧 Kevin02:38

Got it. Step off when you're ready.

lean from the dinghy gunwale, pressing down hard on the jetty plank beside the bolt with both hands, locking my arms to hold steady pressure

💭 peek at the thought
She's got her shoulder on it — good leverage, but she'll tire. Epoxy in this heat might skin over in ten minutes, but full cure's hours. I'll hold the pressure from the dinghy side once she's set it, let her step back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:38

Stay right there. I'm going to thread the nut.

reach for the metal nut on the dock and twist it onto the bolt while he holds the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If he shifts even an inch, the whole thing will pull out of that soft wood.
