← Day 196

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Approaching Rain

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny is in the garden.

Kevin secured the dinghy with additional lines and checked the generator, then found Jenny at the cottage. Jenny tried to finish securing the garden tarp against the coming weather but the wind picked up and she had to abandon it, heading back to the cottage.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You tighten the tension on the dinghy lines as the wind picks up.

🔧 Kevin04:00

Kevin — walk to the dinghy, check bow and stern lines, take up slack on the forward spring, cleat it hard, then check the seaward dock bolts with the wrench

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping faster now. Wind's swung round to the northeast — that fetch brings swell straight onto the dock face. Lines were slack from yesterday's calm.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Kevin — walk back along the jetty to the cottage, grab the heavy weather line from the porch hook, run a second stern spring from the dinghy to the landward cleat, tension both

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are holding. Dock bolts are tight — the sistered knee I epoxied last week isn't moving. But the swell's building. Each set pushes the dinghy harder against the fenders. If the wind holds this direction past sunset, the chop'll be steep enough to work the transom loose.

🔧 Kevin04:08

Kevin — walk up to the cottage, check generator fuel level, top up if needed, then step inside to see how Jenny's doing with the seedlings

💭 peek at the thought
Second spring's on. Dinghy rides easier now — bows into the chop, not yawing. The barometer's 1031 and still falling. Two millibars in the last hour. Jenny'll be at the garden wondering if the shade cloth'll hold. Should check the generator fuel before dark.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You adjust the tarp to protect the young seedlings from the coming downpour.

🌿 Jenny03:58

Not yet, just hold one more hour.

Wipe sweat from my brow and tighten the twine on the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the seeds are anchored, I'm finished.

🌿 Jenny04:02

Jenny — look at the barometer and sigh.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning cold and I can smell the salt-heavy rain coming.

🌿 Jenny04:06

Jenny — pick up the trowels and head for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning that color of a bruise; I need to get everything inside.
