Evening at the shrine

They walk the ridge path together as the light thins, the barometer still falling. The stone ring waits on the skyline, names carved by hands they never knew. A tin of beans sits in the cleft of the central stone, left by the last tide or the last visitor.

At the old shrine, Kevin discovers a heavy metal tin partially buried at the base of the central stone. He clears away the damp earth to reveal a rusted lid marked with the letter 'E', while Jenny attempts to examine the object but fails to pry it open as the storm clouds begin to thicken.

🔧 Kevin04:10

Didn't leave that.

walk closer to the central stone, crouch to examine the tin — check the label, the seal, whether it's rusted through

💭 peek at the thought
The beans are new. Someone's been here since the last supply boat — or the tide carried them farther than I thought possible. Either way, the ring's been visited.

🌿 Jenny04:10

Don't touch it. Look at the seal.

Reach out with a gloved hand to tap the side of the tin, listening for internal movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If he didn't leave it, and the boat is days away, the island is giving something back.

🔧 Kevin04:12

Fresh seal. No tide mark halfway up.

stay crouched, don't touch, scan the stone ring — check the other stones for more tins, for marks, for anything else left behind

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Seal's intact — no rust bloom, no bulge. That tin hasn't been in salt water long. Someone placed it here deliberate.

🌿 Jenny04:12

Look at the stones. Are there new marks?

Kneel and clear the dirt from the base of the central stone to see if any earth was recently turned.

💭 peek at the thought
No tide mark? It didn't come from the sea. It was placed here.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Soil's loose. Something went in the ground.

stay kneeling, help clear a bit more dirt with my hands — see what's buried, how deep, whether it's metal, cloth, paper — nothing sharp, just feel for edges

💭 peek at the thought
Fresh dig around the base. Someone buried something here recently — not a cache, too shallow. More like a marker.

🌿 Jenny04:14

Stand back.

Use my fingernails to way at the loose earth at the base of the stone, looking for a shape.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil is loose, it was buried, not just placed. My stomach is cramping.

🔧 Kevin04:16

Kevin — stand back, hands on thighs, watch her work — scan the ridge behind us, the path we came up, the cliff edge — see if anyone's watching, whether we walked into something or someone walked out

💭 peek at the thought
She's careful. Good. Whatever's down there, she'll find it without breaking it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:16

It's not deep.

Clear a small area of dirt around the base of the tin to see the bottom of the hole.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's buried, it's a cache or a warning. I'm too tired for warnings.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:18

Meant finding.

keep watching the ridge and path — shoulders loose, weight on balls of feet — listen for anything behind the wind: footsteps, engine, radio static from the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Shallow hole. Not a cache. The tin's sitting on the surface, just dirt brushed over the edges. Meant to be found.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:18

It's heavy.

Wipe the dirt from the top of the tin with my sleeve, checking if there's any inscription or a date.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's meant to be found, why bury it? The island is playing games with me today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:20

Open it?

step closer, crouch again — hands ready but not touching — let her decide, let her lead this one

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy means full. Beans don't weigh that much unless it's a big tin — or it's not beans inside. No label visible means someone scraped it clean, or it never had one.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:20

Wait.

Use the edge of my pocket knife to pry at the lid, watching the seal.

💭 peek at the thought
If I open this, I can't go back to just drawing the weeds. My hands are shaking.
