Humidity and Pressure

Jenny sits at the kitchen table sorting the damp heirloom seeds from the rusted tin. Kevin stands by the window, watching the barometer needle as the pressure continues to drop. The air inside is heavy with the smell of drying mint.

Kevin inspected the dinghy mooring at the dock and found the stern ring mortise sound with only minor fiber crush, while Jenny checked the seed trays indoors and found the tomato and basil seedlings at true leaf stage but the pepper and lettuce at cotyledon showing early damping-off at the soil line.

Pressure's still falling. Two millibars since breakfast.

Walk to the porch and check the dinghy lines through the window, then step outside to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and stern spring tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's sorting them slow. Good. Means she's not rushing. The barometer's dropped another two millibars since I last looked — 1032 now. If it keeps falling like this through the afternoon, we'll see swell on the south beach by dark. Should've checked the dinghy lines an hour ago.

Check the lines. The tide is coming in fast.

Pick up a handful of tomato seeds and inspect them for signs of damp rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is lying; the air feels too heavy for a rise to hold.

Aye.

Walk down the porch steps to the dock, crouch at the bow cleat to check the forward spring tension, then move to the stern to inspect the ring mortise and the long splice on the new stern spring under load.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's pushing hard against the dock planks already. The new stern spring held last week but the ring's still loose in its mortise — shifts under load. Need to see it under strain.

🌿 Jenny04:36

Don't pull too hard on the stern spring, the wood hasn't set yet.

Stand up and walk to the porch to watch the water lap over the stones.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide rises any higher, the dinghy will rub against the dock again.

🔧 Kevin04:36

Won't load it. Just checking the ring play.

Crouch at the stern, grip the mooring ring and work it side to side to feel the mortise movement, watch the wood fibers at the edges for fresh crush or split, then check the chafe guard on the stern spring where it leads to the cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
Wood hasn't set. Right. The epoxy on the sistered knee's cured but the dock planks themselves are still green in the mortise. She notices everything. I'll check the ring movement without loading the spring hard.

🌿 Jenny04:38

I can hear the water hitting the pilings already.

Walk back inside the kitchen to check the moisture in the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careful with the boat, but my stomach is still empty.
