The Approaching Rain

The interior of the cottage smells of damp earth and drying herbs as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof. You sit together at the table, watching the seedling trays while the wind rises.

Kevin and Jenny shared coffee, then each began their planned tasks. Kevin went to the dock to test the dinghy engine and repair the liferaft canopy using spare canvas. Jenny stayed in the cottage to plant heirloom seeds in the lime beds and address damping-off in the tomato seedlings.

Generator's topped up. Dock lines doubled yesterday. You want coffee while the stove's hot?

pour two mugs from the pot on the stove, set one in front of Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady but the air feels thick — pressure holding before the drop. Seedlings are safe inside now. Should check the generator fuel and the dock lines before the wind shifts hard.

🌿 Jenny05:32

Please. I need the caffeine for the lime beds anyway.

Take the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth, and stand up to check the tomato cells one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but if I don't move those trays now, the whole batch is lost.

🔧 Kevin05:34

The 'Black Krim' and 'Brandywine' are gone. The others have a chance if the humidity breaks.

sip coffee, watch her at the trays, fingers tapping the table once

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling at the tomatoes — checking the damping-off cells again. The pepper at seven true leaves is the one she showed me. She's memorizing it.

🌿 Jenny05:34

I know. I'm moving the pepper to the kitchen de-wall anyway.

Set the mug down on the way and begin moving the remaining viable trays further away from the draft of the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so clinical about it, like they're just parts in an engine instead of my grandmother's legacy.

🔧 Kevin05:36

I'll brace the porch door after this. Wind's backing northeast — hits the hinge side.

finish the mug, set it down hard, stand and stretch the shoulder that's been stiff since the engine mount work

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen wall's the right call — most stable temperature, furthest from the window draft. She's not arguing about the losses anymore. That's either acceptance or she's saving it for later.

🌿 Jenny05:36

Check the latch too, it's been rattling since yesterday.

Pick up the notebook and quickly sketch the pattern of the mold on the last healthy tomato cell before it spreads.

💭 peek at the thought
If that door fails, the humidity will finish what the damping-off started on these last few cells.
