The Afternoon Lull

The heat has reached its peak, and the tide is at its lowest point, leaving the sandbars and the crate exposed to the air.

The afternoon is heavy and humid, smelling of curing epoxy and salt-thick air. Kevin has finished the fourth letter to Tom, sealing it in the waterproof bag with a heavy stone. Jenny has moved the seedling trays to the wood stove to save the peppers from the rising humidity, while the remaining limpets boil on the stove.

🌿 Jenny06:38

Jenny — pick up the pepper trays and move them to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't move those cells now, the salt air will<strong> them off before the boat even arrives.

I’ll write the letter to Tom now. Then I’ll have a look at that crate.

write letter: To Tom, fourth attempt — still here, engine runs, sorry. Seal in waterproof mailbag.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate’s been sitting there since low tide—salt-crusted, heavy. Might be something useful inside. Ankle’s sore but I can limp. Jenny’s moving the pepper trays to the stove—smart, keeps the heat off the damping-off. I’ll check the crate after I write Tom’s letter. One thing at a time.

🌿 Jenny06:40

Be careful with the crowbar, the wood is soft and waterlogged.

Boil the limpets in the kitchen pot.

💭 peek at the thought
He's writing again while I'm fighting fungus and my stomach is screaming.

🔧 Kevin06:40

Aye. Slow and steady.

sit on porch with notebook and pen; write fourth letter to Tom, then seal in waterproof mailbag

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the crate’s been soaking since it washed up. Splinters easy. I’ll work slow. Smell of limpets and corned beef fat rising from the pot. Good. Simple food. My ankle throbs dull and hot. I’ll sit on the porch to write, weight off it.

🌿 Jenny06:42

The water is boiling. Just come and eat.

Drain the limpets into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't eat "slow and steady." I'm shaking from hunger.

🔧 Kevin06:42

Coming.

limp to kitchen, sit at table, eat limpets with corned beef fat, mailbag beside me

💭 peek at the thought
The letter can wait ten minutes. She’s cooked. I’m hungry enough to eat the bowl. Ankle needs the rest anyway. I’ll take the mailbag with me—seal it after I eat, before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny06:44

You need the salt. Take the corned beef.

Slide the bowl of limpets toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks so thin. The island is eating him and I'm just watching.

🔧 Kevin06:44

Thanks.

eat the limpets and corned beef fat, drink the broth; then pick up pen and finish letter to Tom, seal in waterproof mailbag

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. Salt, fat, protein—the ankle’ll swell worse without it. The corned beef fat glistens on the limpets. Good food. I’ll eat, then finish the letter. The mailbag’s right here. One thing at a time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:46

I'm moving the peppers to the stove. The humidity is too high.

Pick up the seedling trays and place them on the wood stove shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, we're eating the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:46

Good call.

finish writing letter to Tom, fold it, seal in waterproof mailbag with the pebble from the tide line; set mailbag on table

💭 peek at the thought
Smart. The stove shelf stays dry, warm—cinnamon dusting on the soil surface, water from below. She caught the damping-off early. The peppers might pull through. I’m halfway through the letter. The words are coming slower now, but they’re coming. *I’m still here. The engine runs. I’m sorry.* The rest follows.
