← Day 20

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Approaching Storm

Kevin is at the dock checking the sky while Jenny is at the garden securing the tarps.

Kevin secured the dinghy and started the Honda generator, but the engine sputtered and died after a minute. He hauled the canvas rolls to the cottage porch before the weather turned. Jenny successfully tarped the garden blocks and mortar tub, then walked back toward the cottage with the limpets and sea beet.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You watch the clouds darkening over the cliffs. The first gust of wind smells of salt.

🔧 Kevin14:50

Kevin — walk up the dock toward the cottage, secure the dinghy lines tighter at the ring bolts, then check the Honda's fuel and fire it up to top the batteries before the squall hits proper.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling faster than I thought. That purple bruise on the horizon isn't waiting for tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin14:54

Kevin — tie off the dinghy's painter with a round turn and two half-hitches, double-check the choke on the Honda, pull the starter cord — let it warm up while I grab the canvas rolls off the dock planking and hump them to the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Should've moved the canvas rolls and tarp inside before the wind picked up. Now they'll be wet weight if I drag them up.

🔧 Kevin14:58

Kevin — throw the plastic tarp over the staged blocks and mortar tub at the garden, weight the corners with rocks, then head back to the cottage and shut the storm shutters on the windward side.

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's running clean. Batteries taking charge. Canvas is stacked on the porch, tarp folded beside it. Wind's backing southwest — rain'll be horizontal inside twenty minutes. Still got the garden wall blocks and lime mortar sitting out. If I don't cover them, the mortar sand washes clean and the blocks stain.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You struggle with the plastic over the tomato rows. The temperature drops as the light fades.

🌿 Jenny14:52

Jenny — fight the plastic tarp into place and secure the edges with heavy stones.

💭 peek at the thought
This plastic is like a wet sheet in a gale. If the wind catches it now, the seedlings are gone.

🌿 Jenny14:56

Jenny — straighten up slowly, rubbing the small of my back, and walk toward the cottage to gather the limpets and sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is screaming. I can't keep bending over this soil if I want to be able to walk tomorrow.
