Garden intrusion and rising pressure

The heavy air hangs over the garden beds as the barometer continues to drop toward 1029 hPa. A large coconut crab has torn through the newly planted heirloom rows, leaving crushed stalks and shredded leaves across the damp soil.

Kevin attempted to glass the mast step, but the high humidity prevented the epoxy from curing, leaving it tacky. Jenny managed to plant the damp tomato and pepper seeds, though the moisture makes the planting process risky for potential rot. A large crab scuttled into the garden wall, forcing a frantic chase to keep it from crushing the seedlings.

🔧 Kevin14:16

Kevin — walk to the cottage, grab the flashlight and the heavy garden fork, then return to the beds to assess the damage and see if the crab's still hiding in the wall crevices.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty minutes of work gone in one night. The coconut crab doesn't care about heirloom tomatoes or my back. Barometer's still falling — 1029 now — and I'm standing here with a crowbar in muddy boots.

🌿 Jenny14:18

Kevin! Look at this—it's a massacre.

Drop to knees and touch the shredded stems.

💭 peek at the thought
No. Not the tomatoes. Not after I finally let go of them.

🔧 Kevin14:18

It's a coconut crab. They climb. Wall won't stop it.

Shine the flashlight along the base of the wall and into the shadowed gaps between the new blocks, checking for the crab's hiding spot.

💭 peek at the thought
She's angry at the waste of it. I'm angry at the waste of it. Difference is I've seen worse things than a crab take apart something I built.

🌿 Jenny14:20

Don't just look for it. Get it out of here before it finds the rest of the row.

Gently move a crushed leaf aside to see if any of the pepper seedlings are still viable.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course the wall won't stop it. I was too focused on the wind and forgot about the hunger of things with shells.

🔧 Kevin14:20

Give me the fork. You hold the light.

Crouch at the wall gap where the flashlight beam catches movement, fork ready to pin the crab against the stone when it bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
She wants it gone. So do I. But killing it feels like waste too — meat on the table if I do it clean, and the shell makes good scrapers. Need to corner it first.

🌿 Jenny14:22

Just... be careful. Don't crush it against the mortar, or we'll have a mess.

Hand over the flashlight and lean heavily against the garden wall for support.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even stand up straight with this back pain, but I can hold a damn light.

🔧 Kevin14:22

Won't touch the wall. Back up — give it room to run.

Angle the fork to herd the crab toward the garden gate rather than pin it, using the light beam to steer it away from the fresh mortar and the remaining pepper seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. The wall's new mortar isn't cured either. Pinning a ten-pound crab against fresh lime with a steel fork is how you undo two days of work. I'll drive it toward the open gate instead.

🌿 Jenny14:24

I'm moving. Just get it out.

Shuffle backward toward the gate, eyes fixed on the ruined seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually being careful. I just want to know if anything survived.

🔧 Kevin14:24

Kevin — hold the fork low, ready to block a retreat toward the beds, and step sideways to keep the crab moving toward the open gate and the dock path beyond.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Gate's clear. The crab's antennae twitch in the light — it's deciding. Big male by the claw size. If it charges the gate I'll let it go; if it turns for the beds, the fork's tines are blunt enough to flip it without piercing the shell.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:26

It's out. Go, Kevin.

Watch the crab scuttle toward the gate, heart hammering against my ribs.

💭 peek at the thought
If it gets back into the cottage, I'll lose my mind.
